You will never again experience Boku Dake Thursdays, where you've been agonizing all week, finally pull up the episode, you think to yourself "This is going pretty well", and then after what feels like 5 minutes later, they pull the rug out from under you with 30 seconds left and make you want to flip a table and throw your monitor or TV out the window.

I went through 12 monitors and broke 12 tables during that show's run, at least I'll save some money now

The worst were those two episodes where nothing bad happened, I bit my nails down to the wrist waiting for the awful to happen.

Re: Erased/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
- Manga 33-36:
- It's not quite as striking as the anime opening version without Satoru, but the silent pages of all the characters existing without him are also pretty desperately sad. And the anime one is kind of cheating to give extra impact by playing with the conventions of the medium, so good job for competing with that, manga! The scenes of Sachiko going to her job and home again are better without the inner monologue, though.
Kenya's testimony alibiing Yuuki is a really nice conclusion to him having been the one to nail him in the original timeline. His note had me going "that Kenya " but it's still another bit the manga overexplains where the anime is smarter to strip it down the the essential.
...Airi! Holy shit! When the punch came, even though I assumed it was Yashiro like in the anime, my immediate first thought was of Airi punching the manager, but I didn't expect it to actually be her!
And we get to learn her dream!
Him remembering the original timeline is a small detail, but it felt like a little shard of glass when he realized it was him in the memory because Hiromi was dead.

- Spoiler:
The Airi comeback was something we may have missed out on in the anime because it really was such a big moment in the manga, but at the same time, it left the anime handling her "dream" in a lot more of a subtle way and accelerated Satoru's memory arc

- Spoiler:
- In the anime, they really made you earn their meeting with how hard you were willing it to happen right to the last moment, so in a way it's more impactful, and again, I'm worried the manga ending will be weaker for lack of it. But it was great to have more time with her and let their interaction develop a bit in the manga, and I'm excited to see how it changes the remaining chapters.

- Manga Ch 37-end:
I found this page really touching. "A "just everyday life" is a treasure.
That was fucking brilliant the way they transitioned from Sachiko's feelings while Satoru was in the coma to Yashiro's, the poignant gradually turning into the holy shit creeeeeepy so that you feel icky just from having read things in the wrong light. I think this might be the best thing in the entire manga, so far at least.
Doctor-san getting some personality
I'm unsure how to feel about Yashiro going back and forth between slick council dude and scruffy non-descript dude. It's a little awkward, like, is he putting on fake facial hair in the bathroom? But I like there being this version of him that's separate from his schemes for power and that he's describing as a loner who was on pause while Satoru was gone, it creates more of a sense of the connection between Satoru and Yashiro. I'd initially thought he just didn't become a councilman or any of that in this timeline, and if they could make that work without taking away his ability to do all his scheming, that would seem better to me, like he's tied himself in with Satoru in ways he can't control, that the town without Satoru changes everything. It didn't seem totally necessary that he be the same now that there was the possibility raised of him being different. But oh well.
Aww, the letter from Yuuki As with a lot of things, I'm enjoying seeing the way the manga elaborates on what we only got a glimpse of in the anime, but I think the succinctness of the anime works better over all, it gives us just what we need at the exact right time.
He's going out around town to find Airi his first time using crutches?? Determination doesn't help some things, his armpits are going to be bleeding. And, speaking from experience, he's probably going to get heatstroke.
Also, dude, she's only met you once in this timeline, you're being a total stalker!
The cat-and-mouse game at the camp was pretty exciting, but as expected, the anime's tighter ending felt more resonant and connected with the theme, and end-loading all the glimpses of the grown-up characters made it more emotionally intense.
The ending was still a total , though. And I liked that last line, even though the translation is awkward "The future is always blank. Only your willpower can leave your footsteps there."

- Spoiler:
I really preferred the anime to all the camp stuff. The cat-and-mouse kind of seemed like too much, like "Hey, we'll use this little girl as bait to get'im" and somehow Yashiro manages to time her floating under the bridge as he's going to make it explode or something
More later but I gotta brb

- Yeah, I agree with that. Serial killer masterminds can very quickly get ridiculous. It's exciting but it's not a strong choice.

Re: Erased/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
Aight, also
- Spoiler:
I like to think that Doctor-kun liked Sachiko's curry so much that they're now dating each other
Also also, Airi. It was pretty AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH when she came back like she did in the manga, but I also prefer the anime's take on this. We're never explicitly told her dream, it's only hinted at by her making the screen with her fingers before Satoru is arrested, and only shown by her snapping pictures before they meet again under the bridge. And it just fucking KILLS YOU that she's not there in the anime, especially with that one moment where it shows her blanked out in Satoru's film memory, and you're just kind of waiting going "IS IT? IS IT? PLEASE BE. OH GOD PLEASE" and then it's her and then even the people who didn't like the rest of the how the last two episodes progressed (I do know some) start going ;_;

- That's it exactly. You're wishing for it so hard it makes it all worth it, it holds it back as long as it possibly can and then delivers. To a lesser extent, I feel that way for Yuuki, too, it was such a happy surprise seeing him there in the ending shots.
I didn't actually pick up on her dream in the anime, I'd forgotten that there was something she'd never said by the end
What were peoples' objections to the last two episodes? I found the episodes between when they saved Kayo and the one where he wakes up the weakest.

Re: Erased/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
- Spoiler:
There were a looooot of people kind of mad that Kayo "didn't wait" for Satoru, but I think you can tell which kinds of people those are.
There were also people who didn't quite get with how casual Yashiro was about reintroducing himself (even though Yashiro is lurking in the background either literally or through people he knows a lot of the time) and how Satoru set him up without knowing everything that could've happened. He was still wheelchair-bound, I know some people suggested "what if he had a knife" (my response was "It's not his MO to kill someone without setting someone else up) or what if he did something else besides allowing Satoru to toss himself off the roof.

I don't really get why Yashiro wouldn't introduce himself casually, he looooves to do things casually and make it all seem innocent, but I do agree it was a little lucky that he didn't come up with anything else, I just figured Satoru and the gang had plans for multiple eventualities and we just didn't see them because there was no need for them

Re: Erased/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
WHAAAAAAAT?? I'm scared to go back to this world, what if it takes back the ending???
- Gaiden Ch1:
-I didn't remember the manga art being this awkward
-seeing Yashiro again gave me a moment of pure, visceral rage
-Kenya comforting Kayo :'(
-Kayo trying to be cheerful for coma'd Satoru and for Sachiko :'(
-She's still calling Sachiko "Mom"
-This scene is heartbreaking, the way she watches Kayo walking away in the dark, and then turns away, back to the room that she's going to stay guarding faithfully for 15 goddamn years.
-Sachiko's letter, releasing Kayo so she'll will live and grow and be part of the town without him until he wakes up

Re: Erased/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
- Gaiden 2&3:
Kenya's was so calm and factual, as I suppose it should be. Interesting, but not that emotionally grabbing or needed.
-But his face when he gets the phone call
- Gaiden4:
-Just following Sachiko around her daily life is heartwarming like I just came home to my mom making me my favourite food
-But there's something very poignant about the dutiful, frugal grocery lists at the bottom of every diary entry.
-Her guilt at getting divorced
-Wee little Sachiko!
-Rock in the window, like mother like son
-The scene of Satoru and Kayo sleeping
I'm enjoying it, but I think this a case of a story that didn't need more. It was complete exactly how it was and I think it's probably just going to be filling gaps that we already had all we needed to fill them in ourselves.
