I really hate the obsessive love that American team sports have for the military. It's so tacky and overdone.

I was watching that game in LA last night about 30 minutes away from Pasadena. Sooo many illegal fireworks from neighboring hoods. And TBH I think female rugby players are way tougher than any male soccer players. "Bloody nose? WTF is that?"

I'd argue that the women soccer players are tougher than the men. As a whole, women soccer players don't flop. The Mikey wrote:WJMorris3 wrote:I hate losing to Mexico.

And to think, if the refs get it right last Monday night, we're probably talking four blown lead by the Seahawks.bomaye wrote:>Seahawks

They sleepwalk through entire halves and have enough talent to still hang around

Re: Sports Griping Thread
OK, so why is it that if an NFL player gets accused of a hit and run he's suspended indefinitely but an NHL player gets accused of rape and all of a sudden it's "innocent until proven guilty" and "let him play"? Really?

Re: Sports Griping Thread
Yep, for multiple reasons
1) Star player, so there's big money at stake
2) He plays for an American team. Even if it is in Chicago, it's still the NHL in America, there's not going to be as much recognition as an NFL or College Football player
3) The NHL and hockey players in general get a loooot leeway with sports media because they've traditionally been the easiest pro athletes to deal with.
Shit sucks.

That's kind of what I was assuming. Hockey seems to have a lot fewer fair weather or casual fans in the US than the NFL does, and I can imagine a core group of people who really love the sport being more inclined to defend the player than a broader group of people that includes people who only watch an occasional game would.

I didn't know that. Interesting.
I'm wondering if there might also be a racial element to all of this, at least in terms of public reception if not in terms of reporting bias?

I'm still debating the merits of our local fans booing Patrick Kane every time he touched the puck, and chanting "She said no!" at him.
On the one hand, shaming the (alleged) rapist but at the same time, it seems to be marginalizing the victim.

It's hard to say. It IS an extremely white league and an extremely white sport, and also a low-key sport and not a ratings driver for reporting. It could be a perfect storm for slipping under the American radar when it comes to things like that.

Whatever the reality of the actual situation, Patrick Kane has been a Grade-A douchebag for years (personally it's between him and Corey Perry for the players I hate the most, and Perry is just mostly for his skill in being annoying as fuck on the ice) it wouldn't take much for people who hate him and the recent success of the Blackhawks to use this as ammunition against him without regard for the alleged victim :/

Is it wrong of me to use this thread to complain about the Jays making it in to the next stage? The news is now literally 50% Jays-related, including at least 10 minutes of talking to random fans.

Kind of a crossover.
It's terribly amusing that the Cubs, of all teams, got knocked out of the postseason on Back to the Future Day.

Fuck it, bye Chargers. You're making this too easy for yourselves. You're now 2 - 5 and any chance you had at this being "Our Season" has gone down the shitter. Fuck it, go to LA, we want Comic-Con over you anyway. :grrr:

New York City FC is not my team.
But darn it, Sheik Mansour, you can't buy MLS titles like you can EPL titles. Firing Jason Kreis was not a good idea.

I want to go see the Golden Swing just once in my life. /whine
However, I doubt if I will ever be sufficiently fit to deal with altitude in Ecuador in mid-February.
Also, since Roger makes about $70 million annually from endorsements, is there a reason he can't give me just one? I'm not even talking about one annually; I'm just talking about one. He won't even miss it.

Re: Sports Griping Thread
I'm just going to leave this quote here, it sums things up quite nicely.
The Pennsylvania Ballet wrote:A Facebook user recently commented that the Eagles had "played like they were wearing tutus!!!"
Our response:
"With all due respect to the Eagles, let's take a minute to look at what our tutu wearing women have done this month:
By tomorrow afternoon, the ballerinas that wear tutus at Pennsylvania Ballet will have performed The Nutcracker 27 times in 21 days. Some of those women have performed the Snow scene and the Waltz of the Flowers without an understudy or second cast. No 'second string' to come in and spell them when they needed a break. When they have been sick they have come to the theater, put on make up and costume, smiled and performed. When they have felt an injury in the middle of a show there have been no injury timeouts. They have kept smiling, finished their job, bowed, left the stage, and then dealt with what hurts. Some of these tutu wearers have been tossed into a new position with only a moments notice. That's like a cornerback being told at halftime that they're going to play wide receiver for the second half, but they need to make sure that no one can tell they've never played wide receiver before. They have done all of this with such artistry and grace that audience after audience has clapped and cheered (no Boo Birds at the Academy) and the Philadelphia Inquirer has said this production looks "better than ever".
So no, the Eagles have not played like they were wearing tutus. If they had, Chip Kelly would still be a head coach and we'd all be looking forward to the playoffs."
Happy New Year!

Re: Sports Griping Thread
Chris Jones' NFL combine performance can be summed up thusly:
STRENGTHS: Shows good size, potential for growth, gets solid extension
WEAKNESSES: Struggles to corral ball carriers
(I'm not posting the video of his 40 yard dash; let's just say there was a wardrobe malfunction.)
