Can we finally retire the rhetorical device of inventing what coverage/commentary would have been like if X was somehow different? What it really means is "this is what coverage would have been like had it been written by this strawman I just invented to prove a point for which I lack actual evidence."

It sounds like it proves something, but all it does is prove that the author has an imagination in line with their politics.
