- Spoiler responding to Bomaye's spoiler:
- No, I think the author admits that that's what it is now, just insists that that wasn't his intention originally and he had to have it pointed out to him that, yes, it really is an alternate future of those two.
I knew you'd like that one, Werel. Such a good chapter!

- But as a MadaxSaki alternate future, Spotted Flower feels really off, doesn't it? I mean the Madarame-type character is a total push-over without any of the endearing aspects of the original Mada and the Kasukabe-type character isn't the loud, colourful type she was in Genshiken...
By the way, is the girl from the last page of chapter 12 a thin Yajima?

Spotted Flower
- Spoiler:
Yes, that's thin Yajima.
I'd chalk up the rest to maturity.

Re: Genshiken
- Spotted Flower:
- Whaaaaat, it's clearly the Future Like That. Can't explain away the bottom panel on this page
But I'm kinda with litterature on both of them feeling a bit off (I'm only 3 chapters in, though). If it's just maturity, it feels the kind of weary maturity which follows terrible life events. What else happened in The Future Like That?
Other favorite Genshiken moments so far:
- Chapters 82-95:
-Keiko... is not wrong.
-Goddamn, Kuchiki's intervention. Hilarious + echoes of Ohno & Ogiue.
-While Yoshitake's heart is in the right place, this is a pretty good example of "attempting to 'dispel the illusion' of attraction to someone almost never works."

Re: Genshiken
That Kuchiki scene is one of my favourite in the entire series. He's so sincere about it!
And Keiko can be a surprisingly sharp one. I've gotten to find her quite an interesting character, which I didn't expect to happen.

Re: Genshiken
Lol... Genshiken 1 was pretty realistic but Genshiken 2 gets crazier with each chapter.
By the way, why does Sasahara-imouto call Mada "Watanabe"? Where does that come from?

Re: Genshiken
TV Tropes says it's because Madarame is an uncommon name and Watanabe has similar pronunciation and probably much more common, so it's kind of a "I'm not paying much attention to you" nickname

- Spoilers for Ch. 111:
- Holy shit, maybe Madarame's not such a sou-uke after all!? He continues to surprise me with his degree of not-totally-straight-ness. And that was not the 'Kuchiki wakes up while they're like that' moment I expected.

Re: Genshiken
- Spoilers for chapter 112:
It would be so diabolical! But too out of nowhere... which I guess would make it much like the way Yoshitake suddenly became one of my favourite characters. She's so obnoxious and terrifying, and unexpectedly enthusiastic about history If she doesn't become the new president, I'll be so disappointed.
Looking forward to Keiko and Hato getting some screen time together. I'd really like to see their relationship develop beyond just competing over Madarame, they've got so much potential for an interesting rivalry/friendship, and I think the author needs to be setting up more interactions and subplots that don't rest on Madarame if he's ever going to be allowed to end the harem and move on.
I'm entertained by the way the characters have gone from trying to understand life in terms of anime cliches, to actually trying to use them to gain some control over situation while still not totally understanding that they could get more control over situations by speaking up about what they want and acting on their choices.

I read a bit of it. Some interesting stuff there. Did you like Yoshitake from the start, litterature? She was actually one of my least favourite characters until recently.

I use Ogiue Maniax to let me know when it's time to start regularly checking for scanslations. I do like some of the analysis on there, and always mean to read more about other subjects on it

Re: Genshiken
Sorry I took so long to reply!
At first I thought Yoshitake was boring. I didn't hate her, but she seemed superfluous. However, this is one of the few times a character surprises me, and not in the typical shounen way where a bad guy pops up and three chapters later he suddenly has the deepest nakamahood deal with the main character. Maybe Shimoku hadn't thought of it at all, but it's nice how her character develops, so hats off!

Re: Genshiken
Oh, I actively disliked her because she had absolutely no respect for boundaries, I found her rather skin-crawling. But she's toned that down just enough that I don't find it impossible to enjoy her presence, and become more of a comedy character like the original President, which means things that bugged me when I was looking at her more as a regular person can just be entertainingly "I can't believe she did that". I'll be interested to see if she's given more of a serious side to her development or not.

Re: Genshiken
113 is up! Colour pages, too!
As for Yoshitake's first few appearances, I've encountered a few ultragenki people in real life and although sometimes I've been offended by them, in the end I made friends with them, so maybe I was being reminded of specific people and that made me tolerate her character? I tend to find a moderate degree of meddlesome mischievousness endearing, too. That said, I really did find her uninteresting at first - you could've removed her and, other than having to replace a few of Yajima's lines with thought bubbles, not much would have changed.
BTW, Kio Shimoku's style is pretty cool, isn't it? Maybe the lines are a bit too shounen-esque with the sharp, angular modulation, but unlike actual shounen series the overall feeling is very clean, and even though he uses tones A LOT, the pages aren't dark and confusing, and I really like that mid-grey look...

Re: Genshiken
What a wonderful chapter
- Spoiler:
- Loved the Mada/Yoshitake interaction. She's so blunt with him, def the secret Madarame harem winner
- Kuchiki/Yajima with a surprise good interaction. Both lamenting randomly pairing up with the other and the "Sense of Ease" shared between guys.
- Hato and Keiko share war stories and end up hating Mada at the end x)
- Annnnnd Angela is basically going to sexually assault Madarame next chapter

Re: Genshiken
- Spoiler:
- I love Hato and Keiko together. They've got a great dynamic with the rivalry and then also landing up talking to each other pretty honestly. It reminds me a little of early Madarame and Kasukabe, without the crush (and when he had pride ). I really hope Keiko doesn't disappear once the harem is resolved. And I'm liking Madarame and Yoshitake too, I could definitely see them as friends if she doesn't pull off that surprise harem win.
Angela Poor Madarame.
And yeah, litterature, I like the art style, it's clean but energetic. I found the backgrounds in the colour pages a little too obtrusive, though, not as heavily stylized and too brightly coloured compared to the b&w versions. I LOL'd at Ogiue's manga-ka take on the construction, it's so realistic.

Re: Genshiken
CHAPTERS 101-111
- ARE PRETTY FREAKING GREAT:
-Kugayama is the most reliable confidante Madarame's got? Makes sense. (Pretty happy to see Kugapii again, he gets some pretty great screentime)
-Ohhhh snap they have now both outright said what had only been assumed
-Kugapii doesn't stutter when he's yelling
-Cabaret club... holy lol. So I'm gonna just be blushing through three straight chapters, huh? That's how this is gonna be, Shimoku? FINE
-Keiko, Giving Voice to What All the Readers are Thinking & Living the Goddamn Dream
-Sue's many-masks attempt to stop blushing is the first legit cute thing she's ever done.
-DID HE WINK? IS THIS A WINK? OH MY GOD I'M DYING
-Smoooooth >.<
-Wait what does this second-to-last panel mean?!
-It's getting to the point where Kuchiki is actually just pretty endearing with all his shameless perviness and over-the-top meta shit. And c'mon, his parting request isn't that unreasonable
-Yajima's mooooom ahahaha
-Hatoooooo why you got the strength and wisdom to give up your dream?? why you gotta be so right about fantasy vs. reality??
-Bahahaha the fanservice conversation
-Okay but seriously "I'd never dream of being so forceful with anyone but you, Hato-kun."
-And seriously, yes, Madarame just keeps on sliding around the Kinsey scale. I kinda dig it

Chapter 114 is outtttttttttttt
- Spoiler:
- "Real Yuri" oh damn x)
- Keiko getting scary because she might be going mean
- I'm not sure what to make of Angela now. I think everyone was expecting the boob grab, which is a sexual nuclear bomb, but the face grab is kind of like a shot from the Death Star emotionally

Re: Genshiken
- Spoiler:
-I'm actually pretty excited about the Keiko bit, I've really wanted to see Yajima get roped into her plot more and she could bring out some interesting things in the Yajima/Hato rivalry/crush/friendship/whatever it is, too. And she's not as mean when it comes down to it as she likes to think she is.
-Yeah, I did not expect Angela to go the restrained, emotional route. She's smarter than I thought.
-Angela zipping up the shirt when she draws Kuchiki

Re: Genshiken
- Spoiler:
-Folk dancing in middle school
-"Do we really need to add the 'het' disclaimer here?"
-Angela KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING. I also would have expected her to go for the boob grab, but smart is much more interesting. Good thing she got that "she doesn't seem like she does what she wants without thinking of other people" disclaimer, though, cause the face touch could also just be DANGER DANGER
