Re: Vinland Saga
E9
- Spoiler:
-Vinland's so perfect you wake up with an adorable lamb gambolling on your chest.
-probably not a good sign for his concussion that he's so deep into Vinland that he thinks his old life was just a nightmare
-Einar's got impressive stamina!
-even in Vinland he can't escape his past, but now the worst thing for him is who he was destroying Einar
-he remembered "no one has any enemies!" Seems like a hard message to believe as a slave, though.
-interesting that he thinks it's Valhalla even though it's horrifying, he's changed his view so completely. He's definitely gonna go Christian.
-ooh, Askeladd, this is getting interesting
-I wouldn't have thought he'd see Askeladd as having this much contempt for battle, even though it feels like a plausible version of a post-death him based on the character we the viewers have seen, I wouldn't expect Thorfinn's view of him, having seen him only when he was a traumatized, rage-filled child, to have that much perspective. Not in the sense that it doesn't work, I do buy it how they're telling it, it just feels like an unexpected angle
-apologizing to all the people he killed while they try to drag him down
-and Ashkeladd actually trying to save him
-Go Thorfinn! Climb!!
-going full-on pacifist, thematically and for character development it feels like what should happen, but part of me is disappointed we're not going to get that badass Thorfinn fighting. In general, the content of this season is so different from last that it could be a different series, except it's totally continuous in tone and theme, going from a mostly action show to something slower and mostly character-based while still feeling the same on the broader scale, it's rare and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
-his dad walking away into Vinland
-wow, they're actually not getting punished, Pater really came through for them, I wasn't expecting that
-Next week: Many random people smile.

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E10
- Spoiler:
-it's still weird seeing Thorfinn happy
-wants to rid the world of war and slavery, that seems like it's gonna take him to Canute one way or another, which does not at all seem like it'll go well with his vow to never fight again. Come on, give us those emotional/philosophical dilemmas!
-wow, early freedom
-them both faking being thrilled when they actually have no idea how to deal with it
-uhoh, going to visit the king, he's not gonna come back, is he
-yup, Canute's heading there too. Really hoping they'll get Thorfinn and Canute together soon, now that their world-views have both basically flipped
-I kind of lol'd at the way they did a big reveal of Canute's face now he's grown up.
-omg, tiny little Canute all bundled up in protective gear
-aw, he and his brother used to be close
-haunted by guilt, I guess that badass nihilism hasn't completely destroyed his feelings
-the way his lips press together when Harald tells him Denmark is his, like it's almost going to be a smile but isn't
-Man, Canute's going full-on Macbeth already
-it's a pretty weak justification for killing Harald, too.
-"Let us be friends, as befits two cursed men."

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E11
- Spoiler:
-wow, Canute's even learned to fight
-Gunnar has such an annoying voice, his brother was so much better
-his sister noticing that there's something wrong behind him becoming strong
-uhoh, Canute's coming for the happy farm
-useless son picking a fight exactly as the dad said
-Ketil smacking him down for being a dick
-and the merchant gets scolded by his dad too, that googly-eyed face
-IT'S LEIF!!
-HE HAS A SON??
-He adopted a slave called Thorfinn
-Bug-Eyes
-holy shit, his face, I love Bug-Eyes
-Oh nooo, his ship won't go to the farm! Come on, I want them to reunite before disaster comes!
-oh god, idiot son wants to be Canute's guard, this isn't gonna go well
-sawing insanely at the pig with his sword, and Canute's just like "cool, we'll think about it," what is he planning?
-huh, the other son says idiot son's unpredictable because he's a coward while Canute says he'd act as they expect. Either way, not good.
-goodbye farm

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E12
- Spoiler:
-this dramatically cloaked dude murders butterflies with coin-flips, I assume it's meant to be badass but shoots too far and goes into ridiculous, Ashkeladd would never.
-what stupid thing does he want them to goad him into doing, though? I guess something that'd be an excuse to take his dad's land, I guess killing a king's guard might be enough.
-jeez, big bro's pep talk is "you kill them or I kill you."
-and now dramatic guy's taking out people's eyes with the coin, this is bordering on "Batman villain from the 60s tv show."
-but it worked to let idiot son kill the guy, so whatever I guess?
-idiot son sitting shocked at killing someone while his brother slaughters them all behind him made me lol, this show has quite the dark sense of humour at times
-Ketil just spluttering and totally unable to come up with any actual words at the situation
-Thorgil realizes this must be a setup, but decides to make it worse or go down fighting or something?
-Oh wait, no, he's just getting answers. Not sure it'll help anything to know at this point, though.
-Ketil devastated and Thorgil just excited to have a really strong enemy. Goodbye happy little farm (also, he oughta have a fight with Thorkell, they'd enjoy it (until presumably Thorkell destroys him, I wouldn't think he's on that level) (also that would be a ridiculously confusing fight, their names are too fucking similar))
-"you'll have to pile up plenty of bodies to reach the top," and camera looks to the sky so you know it means God, not just conquering more kingdoms.
-Leif smuggling the family out so he can get to Thorfinn! Come on, Leif, you can do it!
-Ketil doesn't wanna come out of his barrel
-Olmar still troubled by the killing, looks like he might land up going the true hero's way in the end. If he stops being stupid long enough to survive till that point, which doesn't seem super-likely, but you never know, maybe this is a turning point.

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E13
I notice there's some episode 1s and 2s on the site I use, I think another season might have started without us noticing.
- Spoiler:
-love that tapestry, it's a shame to burn it
-things are getting gruesome. Seeing some elements that are more like last season makes me realize just how much different this season's been, it'll feel pretty shocking if it goes back to mostly brutal violence.
-who is this guy? I guess a new character, but with characters' appearances changing so much as they get older, I worry about not realizing new characters are actually people I'm supposed to know (much like IRL ).
-new OP, I assume this means it's going to be a double-length season.
-the old master
-oh whew, he's not dead
-Arnheid's here to look after him, the whole gang's hanging at the old master's house.
-Thorfinn laughing looked so innocent there
-his expression seeing Einar and Arnheid talking together, a little pained, like he thinks it means Einar's going to leave him.
-those guys are really gunning to get themselves slaughtered, Snake's underlings really aren't up to his standard
-nice detail that they made her hands look roughed up from the washing. But they make it look way too easy, laundry in those times was back-breaking all-day labour.
-listening to the bible, and it just happens to be the parts most likely to appeal to Thorfinn. If he goes full religious, it'll be interesting to see when his beliefs gets put up against Canute's.
-old master's dying, I guess he kind of has to for the story, but still
-uhoh, sound cuts out for delicate music and showing little details of their actions slowly, that doesn't seem good.
-woah, runaway slave is Arnheid's husband!

Re: Vinland Saga
I took a glance at the new season, and luckily there was only one thing that even looked a little interesting (Tengoku Daimakyou) and not a must-see level of interesting, so I guess I'm gonna just stick with Vinland Saga and finishing Chainsaw Man. Also, there's gotta be like 10 shows involving being reborn as someone else, most of them isekais. Yeesh.

Re: Vinland Saga
Oddly enough it seems like there's a lot of weird twists on isekais too. Like "so-and-so died and went to another world but then died again and got reborn back into the real world " or "so-and-so was transported to another world but they have the ability to bring back magic artifacts with them to the world they came from." Might be on the isekai downturn if they have to pull out so many weird ideas

Re: Vinland Saga
I'm going to keep posting Vinland Saga in case you land up finishing it down the line. Though, I'm finding it a little boring, how slow the pace is.
S2E14
S2E14
- Spoiler:
-oh shit, she had a kid who died
-can't quite tell if Arnheid's in danger from her husband and therefore they're protecting her or if it's just that they're stopping him from taking her in a 'stealing their property' way, there does seem to be something wrong with him
-Thorfinn not letting Einar interfere and become a killer
-the husband's eyes were blank for a moment there during the fighting, like he's almost in a berserker rage in its unawareness, can't remember if he got a head injury in his first scene, but it seems like something like that
-Arnheid trying not to hear him screaming her name
-Einar about to go off and do something stupid, but Arnheid stops him, even your husband being executed is just a storm you can do nothing about but wait to blow by
-god, the stress of knowing a ship coming in could mean your loved ones are safe and home, or it could mean your whole village is destroyed and killed or enslaved
-her husband's the storm himself now
-oh shit, she's pregnant!
-just wants to be able to raise the child peacefully, regardless of how she feels about having to sleep with Ketil
-but still wants to at least tend to her husband's wounds
-Old master flashback!
-the wind blowing wildly as she steps out into the figurative storm
-that sky is gorgeous!

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E15
- Spoiler:
-the cold bleakness of the rest of the world, that glow of firelight with the colour perfectly balanced on the edge between warmth-and-safety and burning danger.
-also, Arnheid's expression when she's face-to-face with her husband, there's a complexity to the emotion that's really nicely done
-and then when he apologizes it just completely breaks her
-holy fuck just lunging for the guy's throat like an animal
-and that chunk of flesh he spits out afterwards
-aggghhh the guard's throat spurting blood is so gruesome
-I guess she freed him in the end
-"the line between warrior and slave trader is blurred," obviously you know there's a connection between the two when war captives are typically enslaved, but somehow that exact phrasing feels like a different angle to me
-the dead popping up to say hi
-Feels like we're just reiterating the same feelings from Thorfinn a lot, conversations and ponderings over again, without it offering further character development. I don't think there's anything more that they can develop for his desire to redeem himself and improve the world without some actual things happening that directly challenge him, they keep slowly building up things that could kick that off, but then keep not actually pulling the trigger on most of it and leaving him on the outskirts of anything that does happen, just rolling his thoughts around and around.
-"You have to defend your peaceful land" vs "total pacifism" is a topic that should be very immediate and visceral in this setting, with these characters, it feels like the creators are actively going out of their way to make it as observation-based as it's being here.
-"you'd have to go somewhere even the Vikings can't reach," ohh, is all this just meant to be the motivation to go find Vinland, and all this moral and practical conflict they've spent so much time setting up is just a pond to skim a stone off of and bounce away to their promised land? I don't feel like the world and characters they've established makes "just take a third option" a satisfying answer to the moral conflict, so if it's gonna be at all satisfying, they're gonna have to force some major situations where they do have to face the consequences of pacifism and make a choice on that before letting them opt out of it. Hope they don't fuck it up.
-Looks like maaaaaybe next episode they'll actually be forced to do something that changes things in a big way. Fingers crossed!

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E16
It's finally happening!
- Spoiler:
-doing the world's worst job of pretending to wash dishes
-the old master helped to hide Gardar, he's such a sneaky one
-Arnheid's already done taken more plot-related action this season than Thorfinn and Einar put together
-Poor Arnheid
-They're gonna help Arnheid and Gardar escape! FINALLY, AN ACTION!
-"Then throw away your sword," the old master's kind of badass
-For a moment there, it seemed like he was almost getting through to Snake
-oh shit, Einar hiding there pretending to be Gardar to make the guards come check, that's a risky way to do this, though I guess it's risky no matter how they do it. But this could get him killed by accident instead of on purpose, not sure why that matters but it does.
-Thorfinn stops to politely ask to borrow the horse and cart
-Old master come through for them again
-FUCK! Snake came back in time to catch them!
-But that means Thorfinn's gonna have to decide if he's willing to fight to help them escape!
-Ashkeladd appearing to him.
-I was worried he was making it too easy by basically giving Thorfinn permission to fight, which seemed really not like Ashkeladd - when has he ever guided someone the easy way? - but then he slipped in that "of course, I'm sure the other guy has a good reason too," like he's enjoying taking away Thorfinn's easy answer, and it's perfect. It's weird in theory that Ashkeladd's become almost his conscience, but they're doing it really well, I'm here for it.
-HERE WE FUCKING GO!
-Snake reading what weapon he used to fight with from his stance
-Don't stop now!!
It's finally happening!

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E17
- Spoiler:
-did they even use curved swords anywhere near here? It's a weird choice. Maybe Snake's meant to have come from somewhere far enough to have Mongol/Middle East/etc weapons?
-damn, Snake's faster than anyone he's fought before? He fought some pretty incredible warriors!
-realizing Thorfinn must have been surrounded by monsters to fight like that even unarmed
-holy shit! Just looked it up and Miklagard was the Viking name for Constantinople, so the sword is because he's from somewhere else! That's such a cool detail!
-that classic Thorfinn sudden run at his opponent, but feels clumsier without the daggers
-That leg sweep
-them both being wtf at why the other is on this little farm when they're so good
-Old master still trying to help, that guy is really king of the mensches
-can't use their real names b/c of what they've done elsewhere.
-Snake got to the cart, seeing what his opponent is really aiming for is still Thorfinn's weak spot. Poor Arnheid
-Holy fuck, Gardar still alive rising up like a vengeful ghost
-Thorfinn completely unable to budge Gardar's arm even though he must be at least 90% dead
-Arnheid lying to him about how they can go see their son
-and that light Gardar sees when he's looking at her, like he's at the bottom of a lake seeing the sun filtering through, like he's already dead and drowned
-but he's talking so calmly and reasonably, like he's still going to live and peacefully go home, while blood is soaking through his bandages, and her carrying on leaving like they're going to be okay even though she knows he's dying
-watching himself set their fates in motion to where they ended up
-goddamn did they manage to make the death of a character we only really knew as a half-dead berserker moving
-seeing his son, and then Arnheid's "welcome home," devastating

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E18
- Spoiler:
-I still deeply hate Floki's square hair
-bowling with dad
-Thorgil's fucking nuts that he's excited that his farm full of mostly farmers is gonna be attacked
-he's not even telling them that it's the king they'll be fighting
-at least Einar and Thorfinn will probably be released in order to fight
-that little tightening around the eyes when Einar mentions Thorfinn broke his oath, even though it's in the context of thanking him
-Ketil looking like hell, on the verge of total breakdown, and comes home to a cold hearth (though, not sure why, presumably he has other servants who should be doing this, given that he sent Arnheid to his father's place for a while) and no Arnheid, this is gonna be bad
-Nooooo, let Leif see Thorfinn! He's so close!
-Pater asking Leif to buy Arnheid and Einar to protect them. Seems kind of unlikely all three will go free ASAP and the rest of the season is them all happily going sailing with Leif, but still, Pater's a good guy.
-Arnheid has no idea whether to be relieved Ketil came to stop the guard from raping her, or scared
-purposely going for her stomach, damn that's brutal
-wait, no, he didn't know?
-brutal brutal brutal
-Snake forcing Ketil to understand he's going to be killing her if he continues but letting him do it if that's what he wants
-Bug-eyes' little "scary"
-that dark "who says I don't want her" after nearly beating her to death
-I like the way they started out having Ketil be this nice guy who treated his slaves well and let them buy their way free, but gradually showing the limits of that and what it means to be outside of it and just how little "nice" matters if you think you own someone
-welp, guess they're going to war with the king. This'd be a great time for Leif to get them out of here, but without Arnheid not sure they'd go.

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E19
- Spoiler:
-Thorgil smart enough to strategically get people to join the fight, but confident/battle-mad enough he thinks fighting the king is a good idea
-What the fuck, he finally got reunited with Leif and we don't even get to see it!? Why does this show keep skipping the emotional resolution parts? It's getting really frustrating, especially given how long they've been spending on slowly building things up. It's such a weird choice, too, like they don't actually want us to get satisfaction from the story for some reason.
-They translated it as Mister, but he calls Leif -chan!! That's so cute! I'd have thought he'd be a lot more reserved with him at first (though his language sounds fairly polite, which I guess is why they went with Mr. Leif). But again, they've just skipped all the character moments, so we don't actually know his first reaction.
-at least we get him thanking Leif
-the shame in his eyes when Leif holds his shoulders and tells him he's changed, even though Leif seems to mean it positively
-Shit, Canute's here, they waited too long to leave
-Ketil thinks because they've got numbers on their side it'll be easy, seems like Thorgil ought to figure out he never actually was a fighter, because that's fucking dumb.
-Fox's face when he learns they're fighting Jomsvikings
-So Ketil-the-badass-fighter did exist, it just wasn't this Ketil, how has no one else noticed this? I guess that's why he stuck to hicksville.
-"I've been getting a free ride long enough, it's time to pay my tab," and that expression, he knows he's probably gonna die but he's doing it
-and that casual goodbye, and then his men all come up behind him ready to fight and die with him
-Thorgil's total lack of care for what happens to the farmers they've rallied to fight, they've made him such a contrast to Snake.
-Pater's staying
-Poor Bug-eyes, doesn't want to be a thief
-didn't even get to say goodbye to the old Master, after he helped them so much
-her family still alive plus one that's probably the baby she's pregnant with, but the grim and silent forest shows like she still knows this isn't right and they're not safe. Which means she might still make it, if it was totally happy Vinland-y, she'd be dead.
-Gardar asking her to say goodbye to the people who looked after her, and he'll be waiting with both children, guess that means she miscarried
-Einar being terrifyingly intense at Arnheid, hell of a face to wake up to
-Olmar not keeping up with Thorgil to attack from behind is probably a good thing for him
Once again, main characters slipping out the back way while most of the action and intensity and emotional challenge is taking place without them, really feels like someone else is the main character now, maybe the farm and it's just kind of following Thorfinn a little out of habit. Between the slowness and the lack of actually delivering on most of the emotions they set up, I'm really disappointed in this show.

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E20
- Spoiler:
-Jeez, all the farming really made me forget how gruesome this show is with injuries
-Prior to this we'd mostly seen battles between equal-ish sides of long-time soldiers/skilled warriors or one-sided attacks in pillaging and shit, watching skilled fighters against troops of dramatically less-skilled fighters is a new kind of brutal.
-Badger one-armed and insisting he can still fight is getting almost to Monty Python levels
-Everyone retreating, barely alive, and Ketil still doesn't get it.
-"The world exists for people stronger than you."
-Thorgil showing up, after everything's over, thrilled to get to kill Canute really shows who he is; wasn't there to help his people fight, doesn't matter that it wouldn't do their family any good now, doesn't even mind if it's not a fair or impressive fight, like it's a bonus if he's a commander worth killing, but no big deal if he's not, just killing is good in its own right.
-Canute's fast reaction
-Eugh, that eyeball sound
-Woah, Ketil's still alive? I thought they cut off his head! I guess it was just his helmet flying off! Fuck him, though.
-there's nowhere without slaves and war, so Arnheid's just gonna die instead
-just came back to thank them
-those gorgeous clouds
-Thorfinn knows CPR??? I guess it's technically possible, since there are stories of it from at least Biblical times, but still feels kind of silly here.
-I feel like a confession of love isn't really what Arnheid needs rn
-Didn't help I was hoping she'd still make it, somehow. But I do think storywise it's better for her to die than for her to come back to life because Einar loves her, that would have been cheesy and felt off emotionally.
-Einar's face when he realizes she's dead
-Thorfinn quietly talking to her about Vinland
-And Leif's face, suddenly realizing this fucked up kid he spent decades of his life trying to find, what he held onto all this time that allowed him to regain himself and heal, was Leif's stories of Vinland, goddamn that hit me right in the heart
-I agree with Einar's face, fuck Ketil.
-Thorfinn punching for peace kind of made me lol in spite of the situation.
-Poor Leif, after everything he's done to get Thorfinn to safety, but just keeps getting dragged further in.
-only 100 troops can't stop an unarmed Thorfinn

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E21
- Spoiler:
-makes sense not to pillage a farm that you intend to be yours soon, honestly
-"Hell has its own laws"
-Olmar seeing dead people now too, he and Canute should hang out (not that it went well last time they did)
-I do really like that they're taking the most annoying and contemptible character possible and giving him growth and a serious character arc
-there's something so sad about the girl leaving the side of her father who's just lost both hands, to comfort the master with no injuries who's just throwing up, like this is the person who's supposed to be their shelter and of course his small troubles are deeply important to them
-Thorgil confident and happy and ready to kill the king, Snake dripping wet and just looking so sad about it all
-Olmar gets to make the decision, come on, Olmar, do the right thing!
-when he says they'll surrender, the guarded shock and hope in Snake's eyes, that measuring look from the old master
-that "mock me if you want," snot-nosed crying and staring at the ground in shame but it's actual courage. Way to go Olmar!
-old master considers losing the farm a fair exchange for Olmar becoming a man
-oh jeez, Thorfinn left without telling Einar
-Leif trusting that Thorfinn will come back
-Thorfinn claiming he's here on behalf of Ketil seems like a kind of awareness Thorfinn doesn't generally have, feels off
-the look on the dude's face when Thorfinn says he knows Canute
-and the look on Canute's face when he hears the name
-fucking Canute won't see him! Bastard!
-betting on himself with the prize to see Canute. Does that mean he needs to take the punches rather than dodge them or fight back, though?
-Guess it does. Hope he's as good at taking a punch as he is at slaughtering people, because that's a lot of punches.
-I think we all knew he'd win and talk to Canute, but jeez, do they have to give it away that directly in the previews?

Re: Vinland Saga
S2E22
- Spoiler:
-his idea of having ways to take a punch without it being too bad seems to be taking direct hits right to the face Hasn't he heard of glancing blows? This feels kinda stupid, honestly, they're just having him take punishment for the sake of it, and it's the least interesting way possible to do a skilled pacifist in a fight.
-oh, this is supposed to be him looking like he's taking hard hits but actually shifting so it isn't. But they're showing close-ups of the fist connecting and everything and making the hits look like they connect hard. That could have been exciting if they really showed us and made us feel tense to see how he pulls it off, but instead it feels like that's what they're telling us but almost going out of their way to show us the opposite.
-"Simply enduring. Is that how you're going to live from now on?"
-what's with this sudden being aggressive and self-important instead of quiet and enduring? I guess it's to make sure the other guy doesn't end the fight? But it doesn't really feel necessary for that, so maybe not? Either way, doesn't really feel right - it's not just slipping back into a costume of his old rage-mode self, that was a different kind of aggression, and he doesn't seem like putting on a different persona would be a skill that'd come naturally to him so it's weird to just put it on suddenly like this without a really clear reason to try it.
-there's also been no indication that Canute wouldn't hear Olmar's surrender just because he wouldn't hear Thorfinn out, so now Olmar's here it feels like pointless self-sacrifice to keep fighting. I could go in for that if they were using it to delve into Thorfinn's psychology, but they're not, so it just feels like their goal is to show Thorfinn as a martyr who stoically endures and they're making it happen however they can.
-that last non-punch and the dude just falls to the ground while Thorfinn still stands there
-not wanting Einar to see Pater among the dead or he'll lose his cool
-Canute thinking Thorfinn wouldn't hate him for making him a slave, but for what happened with Ashkeladd.
-Oh, I didn't realize Thorfinn was actually hoping to get Canute to not commandeer the farm, rather than just stopping the warfare. They really didn't show it in how he was talking about it
-they did the tide thing right
-Canute's motivation kind of isn't working that well here because they're keeping it totally abstract, when at this point it needs to really mean something real that that strength can do that's worth all the actual, specific human beings dying and suffering. Otherwise it's almost getting into video-game antagonist-level teenage nihilism.
-And Thorfinn's amazed because it never occurred to him to save the Vikings? Wtf? He has specifically talked about wanting to help the people stuck in the hell of violence by the Viking ethos of fighting. And I don't see how that kind of vague promise of saving would hold weight to Thorfinn who's against even punching someone back to save innocent lives.
-I like that Canute's assertion of power is "you can't stop me unless you kill me," rather than "you can't kill me," like he's absolutely treating killing him in spite of the dozens of highly trained and heavily armed guardsas like a realistic option for Thorfinn, just an unappealing one.
The showdown continues to be disappointing, the lack of action would be one thing (and if they wanted to keep showing fighting while keeping Thorfinn pacifist, they could do it with him having to desperately and cleverly avoid, disarm and obstruct other combatants instead of just having him stand there and take everything), but the characters just don't feel as complex or intense or well-understood as they used to, either.
