Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Link
Just skimming the list. Gonna cut it in half so I keep up with only the essentials and have a little space to watch backlog stuff
EndlessA. Pokemon 2019
EB. One Piece
Continuing 1. Boruto
C2. Dragon Quest
C3. Lupin III (if it's continuing, MyAnimeList says it's almost over)
1. Otomege Sekai (this doesn't sound like one I'd stick with, but the concept sounds funny enough that I'll skim the first episode)
2. [Should get back to watching Bleach here]

Nothing that really grabs me, except maybe Deaimon, because Japanese desserts. So if there's anything you're watching anyway, I'm up for picking up something up, even if it's jumping in to a longer-running show.

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
I think LUPIN III: PART VI or VII (if that is whatever part this season is) is still ongoing. I am a member of a Lupin fangroup on FB and they post about new episodes and trailers all the time. Considering PART III went off the air in the mid 1980's and was considered unpopular, I am pleasantly surprised that Lupin has managed to appeal to a new generation of anime fans in a regular TV show the last few years. Granted, 2012 also saw the WOMAN NAMED FUJIKO MINE TV show (which was drastically different), so the appeal for something beyond annual TV specials (a format that kept Lupin relevant from 1989-2014) has been there a while.
The CGI film LUPIN THE FIRST also helped spike interest, I think. The weirdest thing is somehow, Jigen has become a cult sex symbol. Neither of you may realize how many fangirls suddenly find him "cute," especially since he was redesigned as rather handsome in LUPIN THE FIRST. Then again, the character was always inspired by actor James Coburn, who traded on "rugged appeal."

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Whole lot of two things going on this season:
1) Nothing
or
2) Something I'm sorta interested in but it's like a sequel or an adaptation of something I haven't seen yet so I can't jump in
Black Rock Shooter is the only thing that's sorta caught my eye but not because it looks good but just because it's weird and/or possibly edgy, also seems like something I'd drop after two or three weeks

I'd be up for checking Black Rock Shooter out, though you're probably right that it's not going to turn out good.

So I still haven't outright watched anything but:
Black Rock Shooter, Aoashi (Soccer) and Dance Dance Danseur (Dancing, probably) are the ones I've seen so far that might have a little something interesting to them. Lemme know if you've got any interest in them (or in the case of Black Rock Shooter, anything more than a passing casual interest)

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
I managed to take at least a quick look at all four, enough to form an opinion on, at least.
Black Rock Shooter is trashy - do they really have to put what looks like a 10-year-old in that ridiculous an outfit? - and has a lot of cliched elements, but some of the really bugfuck weird stuff stands out enough to be interesting, and it's decently entertaining.
Deaimon is exactly what I expected, a little slow and slice-of-life-y (as one might expect of a slice-of-life show ), but cute and very Anime Japan.
Dance Dance Danseur - I haaaate the way they draw eyes, it feels like they looked at what other artists do and decided to just add something different for the sake of being different, without any relation to what eyes are actually like. But otherwise, it wasn't bad, though too much of the whole "wow, he's such a prodigy" thing.
Ao Ashi was the one I'm least interested in, this one also has too much shocking everyone with how amazing and dedicated he is, but I found the main character more annoying and the general set-up less interesting than Dance Dance Danseur, so I'd pick that one over this one.
So basically, I'll skip Ao Ashi, watch either of Black Rock Shooter or Dance Dance Danseur if you're watching one of them, and probably watch Deaimon either way, at least until the novelty of staring at pretty wagashi wears off.

Summertime Render 1
Think we have a winner
- Spoiler:
- USHIOOOO
- Slapped by a lady who wears gloves in public
- The Anime Japan comf music and setting
- Ushio's funeral
- "Protect Mio" and she probably just died flying off the pier
- Annnd the main character is shooting himself in the head at the end of the opening, I think we have a winner
- Autopsy for someone who drowned?
- Strangulation
- "The beach behind the elementary school" Literally no kid would go to school ever if they had a beach behind it
- And Mio finally showing sadness
- Why is the Japanese Policeman wearing a cowboy hat
- The family with the kid they saved disappeared
- Oh, instead seeing a girl who looked exactly like her
- Spooky, taken over by a doppelganger who kills everyone
- Maybe Mio's the shadow. The legend says the doppelganger kills the original and then everyone else in the house, but Ushio's already been confirmed dead so they can't kill everyone else
- Main character's taking all of this a bit too seriously a bit too quickly, tho
- Shiori would run because Mio might kill her
- FUCK HEADSHOT
- Yaaaaaaaa, I caught onto it
- HO FUCK
- My man just Boku Dake'd, oh boy
Think we have a winner

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Hmm, how far towards horror is it? If it's more mystery it could be up my alley if it doesn't feel too based-on-a-game-y, but I've seen it compared to Higurashi, which sounds too horror-y for my taste.

Right now it's leaning more mystery than horror-y but it's too early to say

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
I'll give it a try, then. After watching a few minutes of Black Rock Shooter 2, the trashiness is pretty quickly outweighing the action and weirdness, and I was pretty neutral on Dance Dance Danseur, so there's not much reason not to switch and give a chance to something potentially better.
Are you still planning to watch either of Black Rock Shooter or Dance Dance Danseur, or did you give up on fitting those in?

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
That's about what I would have guessed I don't think you'll be missing a lot with either.
Deaimon 2 - the character storylines are pretty basic so far, doesn't seem like it'll get much better than this, but it's pleasant enough. Not enough wagashi in this episode, though!
Summertime Render - Storytelling's pretty good, it sets up what it needs to smoothly and doesn't waste time. I was worried from the stereotypical fanservice starting off and the fact that the whole thing has a kind of visual novel-ish feel (surprised it wasn't a game first) that it was gonna be all harem types and mindlessly running through cliches on the character front, but so far it seems like the characters are pretty much actual characters. If that changes I'll probably drop it, and I might also if it gets too scary for me, what they've set up could wind up either as thriller or horror and I'm not sure exactly where my line is. But I'm into the type of mystery they're selling and the mechanic they're doing, and it's definitely the most worth watching of the things I've checked out, so I'm going to give it a try.

Had a spare moment, so I got caught up.
Summertime Render 2
I'm not gonna bother posting about Deaimon since you're not watching it, but please be assured there was lots of pretty Kyoto in this episode!
Summertime Render 2
- Spoiler:
-this time he gets to see more of what happened before he arrived, interesting
-apparently believing your family has been replaced by doubles is an actual mental illness that people can have, Capgras syndrome. Brains are so scarily weird.
-I feel like something's going to come up later on with his thing of "calm down, take a step back," that it's based on something in his past that's connected to all this, something like that
-I love it when repeating timelines make you notice new stuff about what you've seen before
-I wasn't expecting to get this much info on the shadows this soon, they must be going somewhere else with the mystery, then. Huh, so they sometimes double before they kill the original, sometimes after.
-Here comes the 'take a step back' thing already; again, way before I'd expected. Seems like they're suggesting he's already been doubled for a long time but merged somehow, that he can step back from himself because he's two himselves and that's part of why he resets? And that'd presumably be from from when his parents died, the shadow must have killed them but for some reason just merged with him and stopped being evil? Purified him at the shrine, maybe. Or maybe once they've killed everyone in the household, they chill out?
-Oh yeah, and that's probably why his eyes are two different colours, too.
-seems weird he wouldn't be able to swim when he grew up on a small island and all his friends can swim. Maybe his parents drowned? But he'd probably have been more freaked out by Mio falling in the water last time, then.
-I guess boob-pillow woman is researching Shadows. In "it's right there among them", I'm not sure if 'it' refers to Shiori or to Shinpei. If it's Shiori, that'd mean the flash at the funeral wasn't her.
-recording Mio's Shadow, he's getting smart fast
-WAIT his eyes haven't always been different?? Maybe it's not because of him being doubled, but something to do with how Ushio's been warning him? Her eyes are that colour.
They're burning through the mysteries pretty fast, I guess there must be a lot more to be introduced. I'm satisfied that it's not veering too much into character cliche bullshit, and the speed at which it's throwing theories at me is pretty engrossing, so I'm officially signing on to watch this one. Just hope it doesn't get too scary, the reset element reduces a lot of the sense of horror, but I am a giant coward )

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 3
- Spoiler:
-Mental conversation with stepped-back self. With the lighting, I can't tell if it has light eyes or dark ones
-deep marks on the floor doesn't seem like it tracks to anything we've seen the Shadows do up till now.
-he's taking the fact that Shiori remembers what he said to her before the funeral as meaning that she was already doubled by then, and the flash at the funeral was her doubling someone else? But in the last loop, when the cop got doubled, he absorbed some of the original's knowledge, so why couldn't it be that the Shadow Shiori knew what he said to the original? Maybe they can only absorb knowledge at the time of first doubling, and after that they're totally separate?
-I don't get why he realizes he's been infected with shadow sickness all along. Those two images of the flash at the funeral, seems like he's thinking it was him being doubled, but at the end of the last loop, the flash was the point where the corpse disappears and the double absorbs their info, and he obviously didn't die at the funeral - maybe the flash can be any time the double absorbs the original's info and that doesn't have to involve the original's death? But still, they worry about being caught, so surely they wouldn't have done it when he was right in front of a crowd. Unless they can do it from a distance (since the earlier sightings of doubles were from a distance), and it's only killing them that has to be done when they're alone. Or the two shots of the same thing seems kind of more like he's just realizing that he experienced it twice, from both his regular self and his stepped-back self???
-even if he reset on the dock instead of on the boat, the past prior to that point still exists on reset, so shouldn't he still have been on the boat with the researcher even if he didn't experience it this loop? Maybe just because the visions of Ushio are part of the loop experience so the past of this loop doesn't have him having that vision and therefore didn't interact with the researcher
-the fact that there's been a version of him talking about the researcher to this innkeeper means that he has a double that operates independently - and that doesn't perfectly match his behaviour; it kind of seems like less of a match than other people's (could that be because he was doubled way earlier, and it hasn't been able to absorb his changes??) - but it really does still seem like he's got some kind of internal double, something more than a normal internal monologue.
-Cop's reaction was different, so he's the real him. But if last time, the one who came into the diner was the double, why did the shadow have to double him after they killed him later on?
-if a password or clothing works to distinguish them, that seems to confirm they're limited in how much they can copy someone or change themselves, maybe they can only do it once on a living person and once on a dead one (since the cop was apparently doubled first while alive and then again once dead), or they can do it repeatedly to update, but they have to get them alone every time or some limitation like that. It feels like they're concluding things about how doubling works that I don't feel like they've been given enough info to conclude, unless I'm missing something that's made it more clear what they can/can't know and the difference between doubling a living person and a dead one. OTOH, they could be wrong about what works.
-Oh shit, Sou's saying something that's unlike him, has he been doubled already? I don't trust this other girl, either.
-I wonder what flavour 'green' is. Maybe yomogi, since that's a town specialty. Or some kind of combo flavour that's just accepted as 'green' in this town like yomogi-matcha. This probably isn't important to the story
-uh-oh, love triangle
-Nooooo, don't split up!!
-Ushio's ghost? It doesn't seem like a Shadow. But it could also be something that only he sees, based in whyever he hears her voice?
I'm not sure if I'm missing a lot or if the show is letting the characters jump to conclusions they haven't been given enough info for, or both.

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 2
I'll do the next one tomorrow
- Spoiler:
- "Have you ever been shot by a handgun"
- Ohohoooooo, bike brake was cut
- RIP cowboy cop
- Wouldn't people have found the body and/or bloodstains by the morning?
- The way that shadow popped out was some spooky shit, reminded me of Ajin
- Ohhhhh, that's how the Mio shadow got a gun, too
- God damn, bleeding out from his neck
- HMMMM. I wonder if what we saw in the first episode was not the first time he'd flashed back to the past, because he did see that "Protect Mio" thing before
- Holy shit, Mio in this timeline almost killed him because he can't swim
- Ohoooo, so is the little girl also a shadow already?
- Playing a little trick to save Cowboy-kun's life
- Arming his phone just in case
- His different eye colouring is not a normal trait, ohooooo
- "I'm coming to kill me?"
Oh damn, wouldn't have connected that he's probably doubled and merged with his own shadow so that's why he can keep dying
I'll do the next one tomorrow

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 3
- Spoiler:
- The walk into the Shiori place was pretty unsettling. So is the nuclear-blast style human imprints that the Shadows leave behind
- Yo, he's talking to himself now, he probably is merged shadow
- Signs of some kind of hard impact but not really signs of a struggle?
- Ohoooo, the camera flashes are "shadow sickness", so he has to avoid the funeral going forward, or perhaps his shadow double is the reason Mio was doubled?
- Shiomi called the police, meaning the cop is going to get doubled again while wandering around the Shiori house, meaning the Shadows will again have access to the revolver
- Mention the boobs
- Yup
- Ohooo, so the cop not being doubled means he remembered to hand over the cell phone?
- Shinpei's buddy walks in and I immediately go "Oh he must be a shadow." The ability of this show to make you question absolutely everything is already top notch
- With the one single weakness being that everyone believes in the Shadows a little too easily
- MESOPOTAMIAN CULTURE
- Tokiko might be more of a demon than the shadows, damn
- I mean, this has to be Ushio's shadow, right? She's gonna kill him?

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
- Spoiler:
- I think it's gonna be something other than Ushio's shadow, or if it is her shadow, not entirely an evil one. This show's itself a bit of a double in that there's the scary thriller with reset mechanics element, but there's also a softer mystery element; personal-feeling, ghostly, about regret and homecoming and maybe about what stays behind of a person when they're gone, in one way or another. And it feels like Ushio's at the centre of the latter, with the former just operating within that part of the story as a motivation for and way to get to the latter, so it'd be too straightforwardly answering the soft-mystery question of the scene, with "yeah, she was just the Shadow and drew you out of the crowd to kill you, the end."
The way she can speak to him between loops suggests that she herself is in some way caught up in the loops, that some part of her still exists that's still her, so this could be that. Could be she was involved in whatever happened when his parents died or when he got doubled (if that wasn't when his parents died, which I think it was), and something similar happened to her, though not the same or presumably she'd be able to reset when she dies and thus not have died. (though, it'd be cool as hell if she actually could reset but just tried a gazillion times and still couldn't get to an ending where she doesn't die so now passing it on to Shinpei is her only remaining thing to try)
(Also, this show has me wildly predicting and making theories and paranoid by episode 3, that's pretty damn impressive)

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 4
- Spoiler:
-this Ushio's solid, so not a ghost or vision, so got to be a Shadow, but she doesn't seem to know she is
-remembering her own death
-talking with someone who's dead but isn't, with the fireworks all around lighting up the dark ocean, that gives one hell of a melancholy feeling
-telling him she loves him
-Mio alone and looking at knives, uh-oh
-whhyyyy the fuck is he keeping her secret from the gang, that seems like just asking for things to go wrong. (Also, just remembered he still hasn't looked at her phone, classic people-in-scary-movies mistake)
-no, don't leave her alone!!!
-agh, this confession is painful, it makes it so much worse to do it with an audience
-that mask
-and pretending she's the character
-Oh SHIT it's Shinpei's shadow!!! When the fuck did he sneak in, that means the password thing doesn't work
-how did she know he recorded her??? That's got to mean a Shadow's gotten to one of him, Mio, Sou or Tokiko since then
-oh god, all the creepy after-images of killed people
-Shadow Ushio's a traitor
-FUCK, they know he's resetting!
-also, Shadow-Shinpei has the same mismatched eyes as the original, so whatever the deal is with his mismatched eyes is repeated in the Shadow. And it's a recent Shadow, not one from before the show's beginning
-Confirmed they update the memories repeatedly, but have to get close to them to do it
-their mother (I'm assuming Mio and Ushio's, since Shinpei's mother wouldn't have been both of theirs') said the 'step back' thing, did she know something too?
-this is getting very Ajin, that they can't let Shinpei die or he'll reset
-breaking his arm while smiling like Mio
-"Mother will be waking up soon," brrr, not their mother as in their originals' mother, some kind of creepy mother of the Shadows thing. So Shinpei must have gotten his 'step back' thing from it, confirming he's halfway a Shadow or some such.
-Researcher to the rescue!!
-Huh, unrelated to anything, just noticed in the credits that there's a whole set of Vietnamese names listed for backgrounds, I guess they must outsource them? (no, I don't know why I was looking at the credits either)

Summertime Render 4
- Spoiler:
- Hrmmmm, so the Shadow doesn't realize it's a shadow, and now it's tugging at the feels
- "It doesn't think of itself as a Shadow" says guy who is probably at least part shadow
- The god of wreckage and flotsam
- Wuh oh, Sou about to strike out and since we know a Shadow Mio is running around, things will get worse for him
- Or things will get worse because Shadow Ushio will show up like an idiot
- Well, that angry rage-eyes side of Mio is sure something different.
- Ho SHIET, if Shinpei has a Shadow side to himself, it's comin out
- Oh fuck, he got switched
- OHHHHHHHH, the Shadows know he resets now
- And now Shadow Shinpei is assuming Shinpei can figure out how to control the looping eventually so they want to try to prevent that
- Ayyy, Agent Whatsername HEADSHOTS Mio and no one at the festival notices it
You can't fucking trust scene transitions in this show, god damn

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 5
I landed up dropping Deaimon, it was fine, but it just didn't have enough to motivate me.
- Spoiler:
-why does everyone in shows act like it's freakishly amazing to feel someone's presence behind you and react? For everything else, fiction does the opposite and acts like something that real-life people basically can't do or would be way rarer, is totally normal, why is this the one normal real-life thing that's treated as amazing?
-Woah, did she just make it disappear?! Is that permanently killing that Shadow or just makes them have to re-double someone, I wonder
-She was here as a child, and she knows him. She must have something to do with when his parents died and/or he got the inner-Shadow thing.
-Shadows' real self is the shadow of the double, so you can tell because they don't like being stood on, I love this, perfect fairy-tale creepiness
-ohhh, she's the author of that book, I was wondering when something would come up with that
-"I'm sorry, this isn't why I dirtied my hands," Tokiko, what??
-oh fuck, that massive pile of people
-Sou protected Mio
-Nagumo saw being shot before it happened (though not fast enough), I guess some kind of future-sense is what they were trying to get at with making a big thing of her reacting to something behind her
-The eye Mother lost, creepy as hell
-"Cut the power" of his reset ability, ohfuck that sounds bad
-Struggling to touch hands, almost reaching when she evaporates
-THE WHOLE THING CASTS A GIANT SHADOW OH GOD OH FUCK
-this flow of nothingness just poofing people, I've had a nightmare like this, they get the sickening feel down really well
-who the fuck is that guy with the melty shadow in a wheelchair??
-agggh, Shimpei still lying there, hand almost touching the after-image of where Mio got evaporated, this is awful
-THE AX, KILL YOURSELF SHIMPEI! COME ON, NAGUMO, SHOOT HIM
-GO USHIO!!!!
-"Find me and say your name, I swear I'll save you"
-That pencil-like stylized image when she blows his head off
-oh, so restarting later every time is a limitation, I was wondering if it was that, or if it's that it just restarts at the point of the first thing he did wrong in the previous loop so he wouldn't have to get the entire several days' events right all in one loop to succeed; so it's a disadvantage, not an advantage, that makes it way more tense
-It looks like Shadow-Ushio might remember something from the last loop. So there's Shadow-Ushio, Nagumo, Beardy old guy, and possibly that guy with the sick Shadow, plus whatever friends Shinpei brings in. TEAMUP! Hurry up! You don't have much time!!
Really glad you pulled this one out of the pile, it's a really solid show, every episode is a rollercoaster of gutpunches
I landed up dropping Deaimon, it was fine, but it just didn't have enough to motivate me.

Re: Spring Anime 2022 (Summertime Render)
Summertime Render 5
- Spoiler:
- Headshotting shadows doesn't kill them, but shooting the actual shadow kills them
- Ooooooo, a shadow will adjust itself on the ground to avoid being stepped on
- (Isn't Ryuunosuke a dude's name?)
- People probably should've heard multiple gunshots
- God damn, killed everybody
- Off goes his hands
- God damn, the big one just copied her with a shotgun
- YO, she can see what's about to happen
- An eye that mother lost a long time ago
- SHIT, the final boss is going to shut off the game like Metal Gear Solid 2 tried to do
- Someone's gonna have to kill Shinpei ASAP to send him back
- Was that a shadow in a wheelchair?
- YUP, Shinpei realized he was the one who had to be killed
- If I'm him and I restart back on the ferry, I would probably try to get Ryuunoske on my side immediately
- WHOA PUNCHED THE BIG GUY
- Oh damn, she told him to seek her out and gave him something to say that will get her on his side
- AHH, the mother has the other eye
- So his reset point is moving slightly forward each time, which means he HAS to figure out ways to set in motion events to save his friends or they will die and there's nothing he can do about it
