Re: Berserk
- s2e13/s3e1??:
-New intro is... it's... I got nothin
-This bizarre gospel music is killing me.
-This episode is following the manga like frame-for-frame so far, and yet it's weird how flat it feels in comparison
-Ohhhhmygosh is it Hill of Swords time?!
-HILL OF SWORDS TIME
-Did Puck just say "tschüss"?
-Animation seems to have taken another dip back down to early season 2 levels
-Oh lord, this terrible sexy jazz when he's thinking of Griffith
-Really, I want to remaster all these new episodes with halfway decent music and see how much that helps the overall emotional impact
-Fighto
-"Now that the Band of the Hawk is reunited here." YOU FUCK DON'T SAY THEIR NAAAAME
-Everything about Guts' reaction to Griffith, Griffith's reaction to Guts and to Casca, sheltering her from the avalanche, internal monologue about it, ruminations while flying away, etc., ugh, I remember that scene as so good in the manga, but in this episode it feels like nothing important has happened. It's such a pivotal thing in Femto existing as a distinct character and one of the most moving post-Golden Age scenes for me. Y'all should read manga volume 22 just by itself for the purpose of getting this good good moment properly
- s3e2?/s2e14?/s2.5e1.5?:
-Yesssss the mad dog finally shows up
-You sure would be closer to Griffith if you just snapped her neck.
-It got a few seconds of decent-looking animation. Good enough for me.
-EYYYYY SERPICO BACKSTORY TIME
-Same thing as last episode: one of my favorite parts of the post-Golden Age arc in the manga, doesn't hit at all in the anime.
-But really really really, Serpico is my favorite new-party character. Fascistic child literally captures other child as possession. Survival mechanisms are developed by child to exert tiny modicum of danger-reducing control over owner. Child refines survival mechanisms until he's an adult so airily glib, so impossible to pin down with emotional violence, so expert at slipping out from under the whip by ceasing to exist as a distinct personality, that he pretty much becomes an intangible breeze when you try to fight him physically or verbally. Fuck I love Serpico
-That scene where Farnese is all naked has much better dialogue in the manga (horrible, horrible subs). We have cringe-bad as "you're as twisted as I am" vs. some pretty decent monologue imagery about two saplings that twisted together as they grew and can't now be extricated. Why make the anime so bad when you've got good dialogue to work with
-Mmhm. Life's bout to get worse for Guts. It wasn't bad enough yet.
-Disappointed that they skipped all of Guts' inner reaction to the new layer of shit he's facing with his ability to protect Casca. Cut a few minutes of fighting, give us the stuff that matters

Re: Berserk
S2E13
- Spoiler:
- A warning about disturbing content already. Oh boy
- "Secretly, the silence was no longer silent." STOP IT
- Yeah, GATSOO, Griffith's on planet Earth and it's time to fucking kill him :]
- WAIT WHAT
- DID FUCKING GRIFFITH JUST SHOW UP AT THE BLACKSMITH HOUSE
- GET OUT OF THE WAY RICKERT AND LET HIM FUCKING KILL GRIFFITH
- GET OUT OF THE WAY ZODD AND LET HIM FUCKING KILL GRIFFITH
- Brooo, he fucking cut Zodd
- Broke Zodd's sword and stabbed him through. Guts is a just a fucking monster
- Griffith saves Casca from getting crushed, HOLY FUCK I'M MAD
- SHE'S ALMOST SAYING HIS NAME
- Offering Rickert to hop back on the bandwagon
- Fucking crossbow arm shots at Griffith as he's leaving
- "You should have known I was this kind of man. You of all people." tbh I'd probably fistfight Miura at this point. "Is this world controlled by some transcendental entity" WELL I KNOW WHO'S CONTROLLING THIS WORLD
- Made Erica cry, you dicks
- "The safest place in the world" and then we switch to Kushans pillaging
- Man, this is fucking bruuuutal, last season they cut out most of the gore <.<
- "HEY GUYS, I FOUND THE HAWK"
- Guts covering Casca with his cloak ;_;

Re: Berserk
- S3E1/13:
-they put a warning on that this show may contain scenes some viewers may find disturbing... Ya think?!
-I have a recurring Great Forest kind of setting in my dreams, sure hope it's nothing like the kind of forest people dream about in Berserk
-I'm a little sorry to have a new opening song now that I've gotten used to the old one, but I do think this one's ...less bad? The opening sure seems lighter than last season's, it feels like we're more fully in the 'ragtag team' story rather than one foot last season still had in the 'epic tragedy' story. Hoping that means that the tone and pacing will be a little smoother, while still getting the dark and meaningful elements we need to move forward for the old story's resolution someday.
-Guts being offered his own 'quiet country life' and saying he'll take it...and lying
-GRIFFITH?!? HERE????
-Oh god, Rickert doesn't know
-"Since we the band of the Hawk have reunited" KILL HIM, GUTS!!!
-So Griffith does still have a feeling or two. GOOD, that means he can suffer.
-this time, Casca's first reaction to seeing Griffith was fear ; when he reappeared last season, she seemed completely drawn to him
-DON'T YOU TOUCH HER! KILL HIM, CASCA, YOU WANT TO KILL HIM!!!
-Griffith protects Casca, and then walks away casually like she doesn't exist to him the moment he' s done with her. It's that same combination of her being important to him on some level, that he cares to be able to control and destroy her, but beyond that, she doesn't exist to him.
-He fucking invites Rickert to join him, for some reason that makes me want to stab him more than anything else this episode.
-"You should have known I was this kind of man. You of all people." Don't know what to make of that
-Next episode, Farnese and Serpico backstory!
This season is getting right into the real stuff!

Re: Berserk
- S3E2/14:
-the witch's character design and costume and everything seems too childish and light-hearted even for the new team
-sure, it shows his devotion, but given that if Guts is too weak to kill hundreds of demons at a moment's notice, Casca dies too, I'm not sure giving her his food is the best gesture
-demon dog getting pretty fucking dark
-the way he brushes his hand against her cheek
-I see Farnese has always been a real charmer And a fucked up little kid.
-Whipping Serpico for not winning the duel that she made him fight in her stead supposedly to protect him from insults. Something is very, very wrong in her train of thought there. And holy shit, that sadism.
-Acting like he's been into her violence the whole time and they should run away together. Lady, this is not a happy story of consensual kink. Werel, that manga dialogue sounds so much better, I'm with you, why don't they use it??
-When Serpico says he doesn't know why they couldn't run away from the yokes restraining them, I can't tell if he knows she's his yoke or not. Probably he does, he's pretty self-aware. Poor Serpico. Also, great description of him, Werel!
-That crazy laugh while burning down the mansion. I had not realized last season just how tenuous Farnese's grip on sanity is, in retrospect she kept it together incredibly well given how mind-mending the situations. And was actually less evil, too.
-Making him burn his mother at stake
-FUCK, Guts becoming the demon dog for a moment and strangling Casca
-The look of total betrayal in her eyes. So far this season's looking like it's going with a theme of love and destruction, and maybe even hate, being intertwined. That doesn't really bode well.
-This "everyone tries to rape Casca" thing is getting real old.
-Also, why the fuck is Casca wearing pearly pink lipstick? She can't even brush her hair!
-HOLY SHIT, SHE REMEMBERED HOW TO USE A SWORD! Way to go, Casca, sort of
-Oh god, I don't want to see a season of Guts constantly being on the verge of raping someone he loves while she's in the middle of fucking rape trauma flashbacks. It's bad enough the way she's used as a helpless, mindless victim for cheap drama, but "what if Guts becomes a rape demon" angst is just too much.

Re: Berserk

Yesss, I really like how events that would cause most people to lose their minds entirely seem to force Farnese towards sanity. Most of her terrrrrrible problems seem to be a result of having complete power over everything as a kid, and it's nice to see her gradually humbled and stabilized by encountering thing after horrifying thing that neither she nor the church/state/bank have any power over.Enail wrote:-That crazy laugh while burning down the mansion. Yeah, luckily I think that lets up for a while. Once Miura had used that card a few times, like a "welp what can I do with catatonic Casca for plot purposes" last resort, I don't recall it happening much after this little bit. Same with Guts, I think it may be more about actually murdering and eating her flesh most of the time? That armor you saw in the intro will tie into New Guts Controlling Himself narrative, and it's more about death than rape. Or maybe it does get rapey a lot and I just blocked it outEnail wrote:-This "everyone tries to rape Casca" thing is getting real old.

Re: Berserk
S2E14
- Spoiler:
- Griffith is the saviour of the world, according to that Elf? Is Guts somehow the bad-guy in all this?
- (God I hope he is, cut that fucking world down, Gatsoo)
- Oh hm, the intro makes it look like the Elf is going to be a new party member
- The evil dog has a point, Gatsoo, should probably kill the fuck out of Griffith.
- But maybe not Casca
- Puck you fuck, you let freaky nightmare squids sneak into camp
- Guts doesn't even help him
- "Why don't you come a little closer" dohohohooooooo Farnese and Serpicoooo
- Dohohohoooooooo, sadist Farnese doesn't really c-care about you Serpico, she just n-needed a servant is all
- Extreme daddy issues that turn manifests into burning things, par for the course for Berserk I guess
- Wait, was Serpico secretly her brother/an illegitimate child?
- Serpico wins the swordfight as a "draw", this sneaky fuck
- ...Is he turning into her patchwork doll on purpose?
- "Because you're as twisted as I." No, no I don't think he really is, Farnese
- BURNED HIS MOTHER, WHAT THE FUCK BERSERK
- So why isn't Berserk the story of Serpico slicing up Farnese?
- FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF NO GUTS DON'T DO IT
- Casca's fear of Guts
- Of course, there's violent criminals hanging around when Casca escapes
- OH SHIT SHE REMEMBERED THE ECLIPSE AND USED A SWORD
- Uhhhhh Guts
- What the FUCK, man? He's going all Griffith on us
- Oh hey, the nerd-band is back together
- Isidora practicing his swings x)
- Farnese kneels to ask Guts to accompany him, damnnnn
- Heyyyy, that new preview song

Also, despite being grouchy about the show, I will admit to -ing at seeing Griffith-in-Zodd's-flying-palm animated
I'm gonna keep watching the show just to see what they do with the manga, but if you've got some extra time () I remember the manga being a lot better and going into more depth on what's going on in everyone's head.bomaye wrote:So should I read the manga at this point?

Re: Berserk
Ep 15
- Spoiler:
- Just casually stabs the dude in the face
- God damn, Griffith can't be touched and Zodd kills the shit out of everything
- Oh MAN, that lance-stab through the line of heads
- Now is that blonde girl the Princess from before?
- Hrm, a lot of badass warriors being drawn to the Hawk of Light (even crazy ones threatening to behead him <.<)
- JESUS, this Naga guy is Guts on steroids o.o;
- "Say anymore and you'll be the villain" dohohhoo Puck
- Guts needs people again, or he might turn into a scary rage-dog ;_;
- "When was the last time she smiled."
- I'm really liking the music this time around. Dat sinister video game theme at the 11 minute mark when the blonde kid is fighting in the batttle
- MAN, dat archery, fucking faceless battledudes are getting their shit fucking WRECKED this episode
- Griffith used to rely on battle tactics, now he's got such powerful fucking monsters behind him that he just has to blindly charge in and he'll auto-win
- Oh, the blonde girl can see battle tactics and psychic-it to him. WELP, she's one of the scary demon guys/legendary warriors too
- This Hawk civilian camp makes me kind of angry
- "Band of the Hawk" HOW FUCKING DARE YOU
- You know, the way this is starting to set up, it almost seems like it's gonna make Guts the bad guy
- Grunbeld looks like Guts with Klingon head-ridges
- Griffith hanging out with dead spirits because he's the God of this new world apparently
- His cult-of-personality thing has gotten freaky powerful. Almost like he's forcing them to do it against their will by convincing them it is their will o_O

Re: Berserk
- e15:
- -Yeah, new theme song is much better than old theme song, and a million times worse than Tell Me Why
-Forehead Blonde ends up being such a major character, and yet I cannot ever remember her name
-“I knew now was the time when the world would begin to change.” YEP
-Ugh lord I must admit I do love Locus’ look
-Is Raksas/Spirited Away No-Face like a Japanese folklore concept? Or is one just a ripoff of the other?
-“Naga!” It always makes me wonder whether Nagaland is named after nāgas, even though I’m sure it was not
-Puck as Isidoro’s hype man
-Guts finally gets to say Griffith’s first line. “Do what you like.”
-When was the last time she smiled?
-Ohhhhh yes the archer, I don’t care what his name is, his design gets very cool very soon
-Every time a member of the Neo Band of the Hawk says the words “Band of the Hawk” I want to bite their throat out.
-Neo Band of the Hawk being the most progressive motherfuckers in the whole world, mmmmhm that’s some good evil
-Not progressive enough to let the demons hang out around the civilians
-Sonia, that’s right
-Yeahhh Griffith taking the time to acknowledge his dead & giving them farewells. Let them sparks burn a minute before they go up to the bonfire. That kid’s little knight toy sure stuck in Femto’s brain huh

I'm gonna disagree on that. I think the opening guitar riff as the Band of the Hawk disintegrates and the Episode Title plays on the screen (especially episode 12 "Those who cling, those who struggle") and then the thrashing as "BERSERK" plays on the screen and GATSOO is walking ever forward does fit the angriness of the Black Swordsman to me.
The current theme feels like I could plop it into any random fantasy anime and it would work just fine.
Though I haven't looked at any translated lyrics for either (legit always was like "eh, whatevs" about Jap words in the song as long as it sounded good and had some dumb English phrase to latch onto, but then I read Attack On Titan's first opening lyrics and "O Pigs who laugh at the resolve to walk over corpses to move forward" was all like "HOLY SHIT WE'RE GONNA KILL'EM ALL GUYS")
Probs no one can touch Tell My Why, though. Who in the absolute fuck listens to an uplifting, head-bopping song about Nothing Being Wong and then says "I have the perfect project for this" and then puts it on BERSERK. Who the fuck DOES THAT to a mass amount of people?
[I've had like 4-5 non-consecutive hours of sleep in the last 36ish hours, usually my brain will be all like "We're gonna run this through the filter, clean this up to make you sound smarter" but at this point it's more like "it's too rate, it's too rate")

- Yeahhh okay I can see that. Watched both of them back to back, and I might reconsider a little bit based on this super eloquent smart-sounding argument For me, it's mostly that speed-thrash is a lot cringier than generic forgettable j-rock, and I'm always on high alert for cringe in any media that I like. If I were watching this in a public space, I'd probably slam my laptop shut faster if someone walked in on the old theme. BUT: old theme's visuals are better, and if you don't have any problem with speed metal I can see how the song would be a better fit.
Oh yeah, I watched like 14 episodes of that a couple weeks ago and loled at all the Germanese in it (somehow funnier than Engrish). I might type some words about it MAYBEbomaye wrote:Though I haven't looked at any translated lyrics for either (legit always was like "eh, whatevs" about Jap words in the song as long as it sounded good and had some dumb English phrase to latch onto, but then I read Attack On Titan's first opening lyrics and "O Pigs who laugh at the resolve to walk over corpses to move forward" was all like "HOLY SHIT WE'RE GONNA KILL'EM ALL GUYS")

Re: Berserk
- S2E3/15:
-I've gotten used to the 3d animation, but that sword through the eye really doesn't work. It just looks like sticking a knife in butter. Can't say I'm toooo sorry we didn't get a realistic gory horror-stabbing, though
-that light and the faint singing when the arrows can't hit Griffith
-a No Face-like creature?
-An endless scene of more and stranger people each randomly showing up, noticing Griffith is beautiful, getting identified, and then attacking or defending him. They're all blurring together.
-That "and yet it was like a painting" image was gorgeous
-Farnese's speech about why she wants to followGriffithGuts was pretty good, maybe she genuinely has started changing.
-Goodbye pigtails!
-What was that expression on Serpico's face when she says she's going to try and make amends? Skepticism? Pain? Surprise?
-"Why are priests and nobles so over-the-top? Do what you want" was so perfectly Guts. I'm glad they got away from the early last-season writing where Guts was talking too much and asking about things he wouldn't care about. AND HOLY SHIT @ That being Griffith's line, I didn't notice that
-Guts having to rely on other people because he can't rely on himself to help Casca
-Putting hostages in armour and sending them out to be killed
-Griffith leading new armies and gathering new followers. And it's The Band of the Hawks again. It feels like a fresh stab into an old wound. And also LIKE I WANT TO MURDER THAT BASTARD.
-The Moonlight Knight, huh?
-They're working on training the demon army not to eat people
-the souls of the dead gathering around Griffith and then going off "where they can be one" is pretty remembering what that situation looks like from the demon side.
Gonna put in a vote for last season's theme, it's pretty cringey but Bomaye's 100% right on that bit as the Band of the Hawk characters' images go up in flames(? that's sort of how I remember it but there might not be any flames). There's a sense of tragedy to it.
Also, the ending theme, the quiet little song as the shimmering figures (that I thought were the old team but actually were the new guys but I liked it better the other way) wink out one by one and there's a moment where you're scared Casca will wink out without Guts.
I'm holding off judgement on this season, though, because it took me almost the whole season to get to like the last one
