- Spoiler:
- Annie's all about punishing corruption, eh? Enough to break down the gates and let the Titans in?
- No, Armin, she's not going to go down the stairs. It would interfere with her Titan transformation to be in a cramped, dark space

One of the OVAs is canon but otherwise caught up.
I would half-recommend this. It takes a bit to get going, but it's brutallllll (though not as brutal as Berserk), the plot twists are nice (I found a few them pretty easy to guess tbh, but there's others that I didn't see coming), the military tactics and how they battle are cool as fuck, the politics were getting interesting. Only reason I half-recommended is that, excepting one or two character moments, I don't find these people emotionally engaging, I'd say. I'm rooting for them because they live in a cruel world and there's cool characters and stuff, but for the most part I'm not shedding tears when or if any of them die because there's not a lot really happening with them.
- Spoiler:
- Mikasa with the scary jealous girlfriend eyes
- Erwin doesn't afraid of anything, all the other MPs are useless as fuuuck
- It's soo cool the aerial maneuvers they use
- That catch was really cool, especially the giant harpoon net... but then Hanji goes and scares the shit out of her. Why do the sadists always do this? :nono:
25
- Spoiler:
- Brutaaaaal fight between Eren, especially angry-mad fire Eren, and Annie
- People getting crushed everywhere
- Annie's reaction to the church/crushed people and then flashbacks makes me wonder if her father was religious, but then something awful happened and then he kind of told her to get revenge or something
- ERWIN DOESN'T EVEN FLINCH WHEN A GIANT HAND FLIES AT HIM
- That long eyecatcher story... the walls go UNDER the territory too, and someone's disappearing people who find out about it
- wtffff @ fusing and then the diamond.
- Awww shiiii, Erwin's ready to get'em all

OVA 1 - Out of the rest of the movies and OVAs, Ilse's Journal seems to be the one that's canon
- Spoiler:
Wtfffffff, the Titan TALKED and worshipped her thinking she was "Ymir-sama", and struggled not to succumb to its nature before eating her.

Re: Attack on Titan
Gave an episode a try.
I can't say I'm too impressed so far, the storytelling's lazy and the characters feel pretty stock. I'm assuming it does some cool things with the plot later on, but I'm not sure if I want to slog through to that point or not. I'd call this a maybe.
- E1:
-The opening scene of the titan's shadow slowly falling over the village as it appears behind the wall started out being really ominous-feeling and cool and then all of a sudden for some reason I started finding it funny, no idea why.
-medieval-looking but with cool spiderman tech
-Huh, this titan has skin. No anatomy lesson for us today.
-I'm finding the kid's outburst about guarding against the Titans kind of lazy; they're telling something that I feel like they should be showing or at least making the viewer feel his fear and frustration as he says it .
-Giving the bereaved mom her son's severed arm to tell her he's dead
-The intense emotions are leaving me kind of cold so far. The situation is horrifying enough that it should make the emotions work even though we're not too attached yet, but everyone just jumps to over-the-top shouting and tears immediately plus swooshing line effects and things to announce "this is dramatic," where something more nuanced might be more effective. It's like the acting (not the voice acting specifically, the visual acting and script, too) is kind of amateurish, if that isn't too weird to say about something animated.
-also, clumsy info-dumping
-does the blond kid have some kind of future-vision or was it just a coincidence the attack happens right after he says it could happen today?
-Wow that titan's been eating his wheaties
-Man, the skin titans are just teeeny little things compared to skinless!
-their grins are horrifying
-Hannes' badass resolve lasts until the moment he encounters the titan /
-Okay, the mother trapped under the building and sobbing while watching her kids escape got to me a bit even though it's a pretty cliched plot point
-That death scene was horrifying. Its swallow at the end.

I did remember thinking similar things in the first episode, but also started getting more interested in the world over the next few episodes as they started to colour in the human situation

Re: Attack on Titan
- E2:
-gotta give points to the preacher dude for his sheer zealotry, standing around preaching while the giant cannibals are destroying the city.
-the titans' smiles are so creepy
-I kind of laughed when the preacher got eaten mid-sentence
-it's happening "again"?!
-the acting feels a little better than last episode
-decoy cities? Wow, that's cold
-they could totally fit more people on those ships
-OH NO, SKINLESS TITAN!... hold on, how do they keep their blood in?
-Wow, their walls are completely not planned for the skinless ones. And they breath fire, too? These dudes are seriously overpowered
-What the hell was that? A prophetic dream? But he's got the key - but there doesn't seem like there could have been time for the dad to do creepy experiments on Eren without anyone noticing right then. A flashback somehow - could Mikasa have meant it had literally happened before somehow and the experiment was before this current fall of the city/death of the mother? It doesn't read like a time travel series to me, but I'm not convinced it's just a vision of the future and a magically appearing key either.
-I have absolutely no interest in these characters, they feel totally stock. Their emotions don't make me feel anything
-Man, this government's ice cold, sending the refugees out to "reclaim wall Maria"
Starting to be a few interesting threads peeking out, but it needs to get into them fast, these characters are not holding my attention one bit.

Re: Attack on Titan
The characters are only gonna get partially interesting via their different reactions and philosophies to the structure of the world around them, what they think their future is and how they go about getting there. There's maybe one or two moments of character empathy where you feel bad for a character or two incoming, but it's mostly just a tug-of-war between the individual and collective reactions of humanity to the Titans.

Re: Attack on Titan
Switching to the manga to try and get caught up. The acting is pretty bad in the manga, too
The anime seems to jump ahead of the manga and then go back, and the site that had the match-up isn't letting me in all of a sudden anyway, so I'm not going to be able to clearly note what episodes each chapter matches up to.

- Manga Ch2 -4 :
-the art's pretty awkward, the skinless Titans are kind of funny-looking
-grown-up Eren still fighting people for being anti-scouting, Mikasa dragging him away but going where he goes. Yawn. Offers no new character development, plot movement or information for the reader.
-The girl who stole meat from the officers being all "we'll have lots of meat once we reclaim the land from the Titans," she's gonna be the first to die if she keeps talking like that
-The fuck, where did that Titan come from all of a sudden? The way they cut right to the middle of a new scene without introduction is really confusing.
-w-what is the cloud of burning gas that surrounds it? Titan farts?
-Armin seems to spend most of his time panicking about the fact that the Titans are going to destroy everything, not sure being on the scouting team is the best idea for him or for the team's moral.
-Titans apparently don't have reproductive organs or need to eat, just exist to devour humans? I'm betting they're a biological weapon or other experiment gone wrong. And I'm putting 50-50 odds on the supersized Titans suddenly appearing having something to do with Eren's dad's mysterious basement and experiments.
-THEIR HEADS GROW BACK? Fuuuuuuuck
-the cannibalism really makes the deaths horrifying.
-Rescuing Armin from the mouth of the Titan
-Holy shit, Eren got eaten
-It could be a Game of Thrones-style killing the hero to show this series means business, but I'm not convinced. Either he's going to cut his way out of the Titan's stomach, or all that stuff with his father is going to come to something later on to save him/bring him back. If Titans can be near-immortal, so can main characters.

This is the thing I got spoiled on, and the thing that made the early episodes a little ho-hum for me because I was waiting to happen so I could get to stuff I didn't know. Was still shocked at how BRUTAL that went down.

Yep, the deaths are reallllly brutal, even without caring about the characters. It's a very visceral horror.

Episode 26
- Spoiler:
- Titans IN the wall and the religious guys know about it.
- Shoulda dropped the pastor guy >
>The eyecatcher made it sound like they're crystal'ed up like Annie is and that's how they made the wall o.O
- And it would also fit because I think the Titans only attack gates and don't/can't bust through the wall otherwise.
- WELP, Wall Rose suddenly falls
- That Miche guy skating on the ground using the trees, that shit is so cool
- What in the FUCK is that hairy titan o.o
- IT SPEAKS
- IT'S INTERESTED
- IT KNOWS WHAT SWORDS ARE
- IT TOOK THE SPIDER MAN STUFF WTFFFFFFFFFFFF
- That outro is creepy as fuck and also make it looks like the Titans evolved from cannibals o.O

Re: Attack on Titan
Fuck, I wrote a long set of responses and it got eaten. Also, my browser keeps insisting I want to write in Japanese. So this is going to be short. But hopefully in English
- Manga 5-7:
-surely they could have found a non-combat role where Armin could be more useful, doesn't this defense force have any tacticians or information specialists? It's weirdly small-scale and uncoordinated.
-I find it kind of pretty unconvincing that they've gotten so complacent in only 100 years, after an attack that killed half of all known humans, when they regularly can see the titans and even have people go out and be slaughtered
-Mikasa takes down two titans single-handed and hardly breaking a sweat
-Flashback Dad telling wee Mikasa he doesn't know how babies are made, let's ask the doctor
-aaaaand now they're dead
-murder and child prostitution, this show's hitting pretty hard on the "humans are the true monsters (but also the titans are the true monsters yay cannibalism)" button
-Eren was the original badass
-she doesn't know he's dead
-Even though it's so horrifying, sometimes the scenes with giant titans peering in through little windows still make me LOL
-that guy's cheerful expression as he pulls out a gun to blow his brains out
-They're doing a good job with Armin's grief as Mikasa's asking where Eren is, the acting's improving
-And Mikasa's completely ice-calm response, damn
-she's kind of a ridiculously overpowered badass, but it feels good to see a badass for a little bit in all the horror and helplessness
-and then running out of gas and just smiling gently up as the titans come to eat her
-AND SHE'S BACK READY TO FIGHT
-the titans are fighting each other?!?!

Re: Attack on Titan
- Manga 8-9:
-Isn't the Titan attacking the other one the one that ate Eren? Something with his father's experiments to poison the titan with the will of person it eats? O-or did he climb his way up the Titan's spine from the inside and now he's making it do what it wants by physically stomping on parts of its brain?
-raising its fists like a human? It's definitely Eren, or something of him
-which raises the question, was the intelligent one that smashed the walls also imbued with a person? And they/the effect just wasn't strong enough to control the titan-instinct, or it was actually their will to destroy the walls?
-Armin giving Mikasa his gear, and then the other two refusing to leave him behind. I'm starting to get some level of rooting for the characters beyond just "noooo that's a horrible thing that I don't want to happen to anyone", at least in a basic way
-GO ANGRY EREN-TITAN!
-Yiiikes, I didn't realize how big the scale difference was on these big guys
-Armin getting some self-confidence
-Their butts are their other weak point "those might be your last words, you know"
-the girl trying to apologize her way out of being eaten
-Eren! Huh, I didn't expect his physical self to just return like that. I'm a little disappointed, MYSTERIOUS RAGE TITAN was a more interesting character than human Eren
-And Mikasa finally breaks down and cries

Re: Attack on Titan
- Manga 10-14:
-Eren's back to being a badass.
-5 years on and they still haven't taken back the outer wall
-oh god, we have to see inside the Titan's stomach
-oh, oops I was wrong, the Titan that ate Eren didn't actually look anything like RAGE TITAN, but it still got me to the right conclusion
-Also, TITAN BURSTING FULLY GROWN OUT OF HIS RAGE (AND ALSO ANOTHER TITAN'S BODY) this is some Greek myth shit
-okay, that's a little creepy the way he's sitting there smiling vacantly, muttering about killing them all while remembering being a titan, I don't blame the others for being freaked out
-Really? They're planning to put the heroes of the day to death this quickly just for associating with their recovered comrade who may have just been a titan but also saved their asses?
-Mikasa being a stone-cold badass <3
-As expected, this is all the doctor's doing...who is this dark man, and does he truly know how babies are made???
-"their memories"
-Holy shit, he can become a titan at will?!?!
-and he can separate from it?? So it isn't him, per se, it's like an armor he summons?
-Armin saying he hasn't saved them once, wasn't it just, like, a chapter ago he rescued Mikasa with his gas tank and made a plan to save them all?
-I did not need to know about the commander's titan fetish
-Kind of creepy the way he bites his own arm to go titan
-Armin stabbing RAGE TITAN to get Eren back, dude's got some badass in him too.
-Cool page
-for some reason a few pages of Eren inside the Titan hiding in his happy life memories wasn't translated in the version I've been reading, made it seem like he's so far away you have to read a different language even to reach it.
-Oh crap, there's a new guy I can't tell apart from Eren
Now that the characters aren't actively dragging it down anymore, things are pretty exciting. Also, inappropriate thought: if the titans have no genitalia, maybe their size is just overcompensation?

Yeah, I think it's more because all the tactics and the high stakes are really engaging than the mystery for me at this point, but there's just a lot happening very fast so it becomes very watchable.

Re: Attack on Titan
- manga 15-20:
-Sasha's answers to the training guard ...it would be funnier if I hadn't completely lost track of whether she was one of the few new recruits that had actually survived the first mission. Flashbacks suck in this series
-this chapter is kind of depressing altogether, getting to know the characters in flashback knowing most of them have already been killed by the present time. I think I remember from the manga-anime matchup page that the anime told this stuff chronologically nstead of in flashback, I'm not sure whether it'd be more effective having them die after getting to know them more or if this way's more affecting.
-That dude thinks Mikasa's hot, he needs to see her in combat!
-It does seem a bit pointless learning how Eren becomes a badass, we already know he got there, we don't need to see it.
-Mikasa is cold as fuck almost all the time, not just when she's killing titans
-Eren in this scene
-Damnit, I'm starting to get attached to some of them. I might have to go back and figure out who's dead
-Oh shit, back in the present, and they're gonna tell me
-Titans don't even digest people, just slaughter and eat them and regurgitate them? What is wrong with the author of this that they not only thought this up, but were willing to spend this much time in that world?
-holy shit, a talking titan. He said Ymir, I wonder how much this'll connect to Norse mythology.
-And then it eats her, crying blood. There's definitely something about peoples' will, some way it's possible to control Titans to a point but also get lost in them. Do all Titans have people in their core, and most just get subsumed completely by the Titan?
-I feel like they're trying too hard to convince us that Levi's super-cool
-the scientist's zealousness and affection for the titans is both disturbing and endearing
-interesting how different titans are from each other.

I think that way would probably be more brutal. But it's also a very brutal and unsettling effect the way the manga did it, oh crap, all these redshirts I saw get slaughtered were people with personalities and they bonded and joked around and had little, burgeoning plot threads that didn't get time to grow.
(and potato girl is totally my favourite)

Re: Attack on Titan
- manga 21-26:
-Irvine's speech to the Scouting legion potentials doesn't hold back on the grim reality. Got to respect that.
-the recruits shaking just from remembering the last fight as they try to decide to join or not, Sasha with tears rolling down her cheeks as she stays to join the Scouts.
-Marco was the only one of the named characters who died? I lost track of who was who (not having much intro to them before the fight, plus characters are harder to tell apart in the manga), but it felt like half of them died!
-the crossing paths confusion riding maneuver is a pretty good tactic. It's interesting how different it is going into titan territory from defending against city attacks.
-the female titan is considerably less misshapen and weird-looking than the male ones.
-Woah, the titan looks at Armin and then lets him go Do they know him, maybe his association with Eren? She didn't let the others go just because they weren't Eren.
-She's another human-titan?? (I do still wonder if all titans don't in some way have a human at their core, though) She actually seems more aware, more controlled, than Eren does as a titan. And looks more human than him, too.
-if she's looking for Eren, could she be Eren's mom titanified?? The doctor could conceivably have experimented on his wife as well as his kid. But I got the sense Eren-titan's appearance was based a little on his human appearance, and the mom had dark hair but the female titan had light. Maybe there's just a titan strategy going on somewhere that they want him for.
-Irvine's a tricksy one?
-Ohshit, was that Sasha who just got squashed?
-Hanji being super-excited to touch Eren's titan hand
-I'm with Eren, turning titan just to reach a dropped teaspoon is pretty messed up
-Ooh, they've got themselves a fancy new test subject!
