S2E19
- Spoiler:
-her family keeps the place freezing cold just to show how cold and unloving they are??
-jeez they're going overboard on showing us what a poor little rich girl with mean parents she is
-making her have a Mean Rich Person tutor and go to the Mean Rich Person school
-that would be cool if we went into the "they want the students who spent a year killing each other all in one place to be monitored" element more. Like, there might well be PKers in their class, how are they dealing with that, all we've gotten so far is the happy part. And it's kind of weird that they're treating someone actually thinking about that as a sign they're pure evil, it would be reasonable for a parent to not want their kid potentially in the same class as people who tried to murder them.
-Asuna calling out her mom for claiming she just wants her to have a good career while trying to marry her off without even caring about how badly that went the last time
-I might love her mom for not instantly falling in love with Kirito, though
-okay, I like it if they're getting into figuring out how to regain the strength of that world in the real world, especially since it is starting to feel kind of overly escapist the degree to which she's only engaging with the game world and the people she knows from the game world (and Kirito's harem addition from another game in theory but she never actually shows up). They did a little bit of that for Kirito in Sinon's arc, it would be nice to get a bit more of that, with someone who they're actually showing not handling everything easily. But I also don't really feel like her initial appearances in the first arc fit the feel of her having always felt powerless in the real world, it kind of feels like they're just writing it in after the fact because there's nothing to directly contradict it. But, still, it's a more interesting story element, so I can accept it anyway.
-oh cool, while Asuna wants to escape into the game world, this fighter's living totally within it, they could actually do something good with this
-Kind of a cheat that they showed the previous fight's story with a guy, they didn't give any indication it was only Asuna's mental image, and even then, given that she was basing it on a detailed story from multiple people who were there it seems dodgy that it wouldn't have been mentioned. Especially a cheat that they're switching the name to a more feminine one now that we know. At least it means cute girl probably isn't Kirito, though (could be another guy, though, I guess, they don't have to have their RL appearance anymore. But I think more likely she's in some way connected to Yui if she's gonna be anyone but who she seems.)
-Go Asuna! Love how fast she is!
-Sword to the stomach and STOP
-here's the real quest

S2E20
- Spoiler:
- We boss clearin'
- New intro sequence (the last one was more based on the filler arc between this and Death Gun)
- The lively music <3
- They want to take down a boss with a single group of 7 instead of the usual 49
- Only have until spring, the last adventure before life gets in the way
- Your name gets engraved in Beginning Town if you beat a boss monster, fuck that's so cool
- Floor 17 has Kirito and Asuna and the gang's name on it
- Asuna just imagined herself as she was in the death game in the cup's reflection
- "Why didn't you pick Kirito?" "Because he figured me out."
- Ugh, mom shutting of your video games
- Mom asks a legitimate question, why would you go back after you were risking your life for two years, Asuna doesn't know how to say anything other than "This is the Playstation 4, not the Playstation 3"
- Asuna's still so careful, realizes it's a Player-Killer ambush point from living the real thing
- Asuna so organized and well-planned out
- Gotta hurry, those PKers were scouts for a guild
- Trying to dam off the boss room so no one else can challenge it
- WE PKIN NOW
- Fuck I love the battle music in this show
- Ahahahahaha that fuck Kirito was along for the ride
- YOU SHALL NOT PASS

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E20
- Spoiler:
-we decided to make memories of our friend group by recruiting some rando to join us
-feels weird to see people just making up a goal and playing instead of life-changing shit. I'm sure they'll get to something bigger (the shot of Yuuki in the intro where two kids become just the one taken literally seems like she's gonna turn out to be a trauma-created AI merge of two people where one died, or something along those lines, maybe ending as Yui's big sister b/c Asuna and Kirito are too young to let them grow their family the natural way), but it still feels almost shocking to see people approaching the game like this even for now.
-deciding to just play for fun with some randos to un-learn thinking about it as life and death
- don't worry folks, choosing Asuna over Kirito's not b/c she couldn't tell Kirito's the bestest person ever, it's just that he's too smart
-you'd think any parent who's kid was trapped in the game would have total trauma around the idea of pulling the plug when their kid's in a game
-As much of a ridiculous villain as they're making her mom, I sympathize that it must be absolutely disturbing to people who weren't in the game how the people who were are now pretty much obsessed with games like that and the people from there, it'd seem like what I wanted them to do to explain why people who were traumatized in it immediately started playing new ones made by even more suspicious companies, to work out the impact/trauma of it b/c now it feels more life-and-death than the real world. There's a bunch of legitimate issues that the show just glosses over, it comes off like they're making the mom a bad guy for refusing to make the mental switch the show wants us to make
-It's fine because this VR headset has a different name and is therefore 100% guaranteed not to have any of the same risks or safety loopholes
-it's nice to see more of her take-charge, planning-oriented side again, feels more like her
-Asuna shocked and then happy at someone treating PVP as fun new thing, not deadly serious
-she's kind of taking Kirito's role and being a bit of a Mary Sue, but it doesn't feel too ridiculous at this point because it's coming off like she's just approaching it like people are trying to kill her and if you go in unprepared to a boss you die for real, so she's gotta be more on top of things while the people around her are just playing a game
-Yuuki's fighting gives her an idea, wait no, Asuna, don't beat up your mom with a sword! I like that she's starting to vibe with Yuuki, her interactions with the harem feel pretty flat (Liz less than the others, but it's still quite shallow), so sometimes it feels like they're scared letting her have connections with anyone but Kirito would destroy the specialness of their love
-I like how she does magic when she's playing around, but switches to sword when it means something to her. If they played that up a little, it could work to pacify me on how wrong I think her being a mage is, making it like she switched to distinguish the fighting from what she did in Aincrad
-oh god, is that Kirito??? I thought we were gonna get a break from gushing over how wonderful he is!! GAH! When I said she was being a Mary Sue I didn't mean we'd forgotten you're the ultimate one, you don't have to remind me!!!
-Kirito doesn't stand for line-cutters

S2E21
- Spoiler:
- Magic spells are slower than bullets
- He can buy them three minutes, so he even Kirito is not overpowered enough to take on an entire guild by himself
- That Golden Sword is from the filler arc we just skipped.
- Eyyyy Klein's got the pincer attack going
- Yuuki-chama fighting with a smile on her face, for the pure fun of it, while we're mostly just used to super-serious life-and-death combat
- Contrast that with the Berserk Healer, Asuna the Blue Flash, who's deadly serious when she fights
- Kirito giving her the V for Victory
- By the way, I love the music in SAO
- Nee-chan
- We still gotta boogie down, Asuna
- Yuuki-chama sad about something
- Oh god, an MMO where everyone is a bug
- Asuna somewhat lying, not letting on that she was an SAO player
- Ohhhh SHIET, they spent all of Asuna's loot on snacks
- Ohhhh SHIET, Asuna's leaving the Harem Squad to join the Sleeping Knights
- And she walked right into the gang having to go their separate ways
- Group picture with their names on the Swordsman's Memorial
- "Nee-chan" upsetting Yuuki
- Journey's End

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E21
- Spoiler:
-Blacky-sensei
-oh my gawwwd, they're letting him just be able to deflect all magic with his sword because it's slower than bullets It's like they have to cram a whole arc's worth of Gary Stu-ness into a few minutes because they can't let having less screen time mean anyone forgets for a moment that he's the best ever and any other character you're following along with is essentially worthless compared to him.
-Klein's helping but not the harem, maybe they're mad Asuna's dumped them for this other guild?
-Goddamn, Asuna's fast. But it's hard to feel like this 7vs 20 is an exciting and badass fight when Kirito's taking out the massive group over there with just Klein to help, though. They push the overpoweredness so hard and so constantly that it's hard to get wowed by anything else. At least he can only buy them time, not fully defeat all of them, I guess?
-considerate of the boss to wait for their touching speech to finish
-getting to know someone means what they've seen and done in the game, nothing about the real world
-fighting a boss when it's just a game and the only stakes are that it'll make a better memory when they win is kind of not that engrossing either, I'm hoping they get to the twist soon
-she's so surprised at being called Nee-chan, that was cute
-greeting the other group with V-signs was cute too
-Interesting, coming to Asuna's place touches on the mystery, but they're still easily able to agree to it, at first it came off like whatever's up with Yuuki (or all of them, apparently) meant they can't enter her home. Their reaction felt like it was gonna be something like they're all actually unmarked enemies or dead and for some reason ghost characters can't go in houses, something along those lines.
-Aww, Yui left them food
-Insect Site is an impressively horrible-sounding game!
-Not mentioning she was an SAO survivor
-Awkwardddddd
-yep, definitely a dead/game-merged sister going on here. Still not sure what it has to do with the time limit on the guild being together, though.

- Spoiler:
- Yuuki's not answering the calls
- They like her, they just don't want to be friends with her
- Asuna wanted some chill long-term friends who she didn't almost die with
- Journey's End but we still have two more episodes after this
- Eyyyy hanging out with the gang outside of school
- Working on a little doohickey so Yui can hang out in the real world
- Eyyyy hacker boyfriend might know where to see'em
- Bingo, her name at the front desk gets her in
- Doctor
- "She never complains about her own situation"
- They're adapting full-dive technology for medical purposes
- Doctor-kun lights up when he realizes someone else actually understands the concepts of full-dive technology when applied to the body
- "But it doesn't treat the underlying illness." Plz no
- Terminal care. Plz no
- An AIDs accident in 2011
- She volunteered herself for experimenting with even stronger Nervgear pulses
- She' been living in a virtual world of some sort or another ever since
- Asuna's breaking up because she's been in full-dive for a full year longer than them and she remembers how rough it was
- Yuuki was expecting Asuna to reject her
- The twin sister was red herring
- The video game music busts in dramatically as she's racing to Yuuki, but it's also a video game so it's 100% possible that's the background music of the game going off too
- There were nine Sleeping Knights at first, but they're starting to drop off
- Two of them have three months to live, fuck
- "We had a lot of different adventures in a lot of different worlds. I want the last page to be the adventure I had with you."
- Two more episodes left and the pain don't stop

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E22
- Spoiler:
-Getting a little worried for Asuna that she finds 3 days not logging on to be this alarming, people take trips or have exams or shit. More and more I feel like Evil Rich Mother is right to be concerned, she's so aggressively shutting out and discounting the real world that three days away is shocking. Though, to be fair, there's been more than enough red flags that something's wrong to be worried in general.
-also, jeez, Asuna, assuming friends forever after doing ONE big fight together is pretty damn clingy; even given that she was hitting it off really well with Yuuki, "I was assuming we'd stay connected and hopefully become actual long-term friends down the road" seems like the maximum reasonable expectation for this situation - it kind of works, though, because it's like Asuna is still operating on SAO-mode where it's such an intense situation that brief connections could take on big meaning, and because Yuuki's got a time limit and is probably dying or half-dying if she's a merger or whatever that makes it intense for her too. It also works that Asuna's clinging to this new friendship as something that's helping her find herself again and an escape from the real world and even the world of Kirito and the harem, which still connects up with the problems in her real-world life.
-of course Kirito knows what's up with Yuuki :eyeroll: But when he's not the main character, he's eyerolling in a slightly different way, more of a deus ex machina than an actual character to be a Gary Stu.
-Wait, Asuna's last name is the same as Yuuki's first name? That's a weird coincidence. I'm going to laugh my head of if instead of something tragic it turns out that she's some weird experiment of her father's company to create a virtual daughter in the hopes they could marry her off and she was just gathering info to be a better Asuna II or something and now she's disconnecting to go get married off.
-it's cool that they're getting into medical applications, I always thought that'd be a big potential benefit of deep dive VR. But probably doesn't mean anything good for Yuuki.
-Nice parallel with Asuna using VR to cancel out the pain of the real world emotionally.
-oh no, Yuuki is dying Maybe they'll at least end it with creating a VR self that can keep existing after she dies.
-She got AIDS from blood transfusions (Also, in 2011?? Holy fuck that'd be a massive fuckup!! And an extra-bad drug-resistant version? Jeez.)
-Little Yuuki watching them on a screen while unconscious in bed
-Asuna's reaction to Yuuki having spent 2 years longer in full-time VR than they did in SAO
-Yup, there's the sister, but no VR merger kind of thing, she just died, I was thinking along way more weird VR-y lines for the twist. Why did both her parents die, though? The way he said it made it sound like it was expected, as in that it was AIDS too, but her dad wouldn't have had a blood transfusion. I guess they didn't know soon enough for him to avoid sexual transmission from her mom?
-Nothing's impossible when Kirito's around, don't you know
-The whole guild in hospice, dying one by one until they decided it'd be less sad to disband the guild at the next death than keep shrinking bit by bit, this is so fucking sad
-"I want the last page to be the adventure I had with you." Don't die, Yuuki!
-Aww, they're going to do a virtual school with her Or real-world virtual with the doohickey Kirito's been inventing. So Yui sort of does have an older sister now.
They really brought it with the emotions!
I still really don't get why the group reacted like they couldn't got to Asuna's Alfheim house at first, I guess it was meant to be just emotional, being shocked at the idea of getting that close when they've been seeing themselves as apart and better off forgotten by people who aren't terminally ill? Or maybe they thought she meant her real-world house, but that'd be weird given that you can't assume they all lived anywhere near each other.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
- Spoiler:
Asuna's and the other SAO survivors habits are really super interesting either way you look at it. They were stuck in this game for 2 years in a life or death struggle, and then when they finally leave it, they're thrown into a school and social situation with each other and pick their habits of virtual gaming together back up. They have PTSD, they might a situation where the fantasy is just as real to them as reality is because of their real life inside the fantasy, and no one in the "real world" is going to get it. It's like boomers not understanding why friends text each other instead of call each other or play video games online with each other instead of by each other on the couch.
I do think Asuna's mom would be right to be concerned, but her concerns are for the wrong reasons: She's accelerating his daughter's life and trying to cut off her social circle just because she wants Asuna embedded in upper-class life ASAP no matter what it takes and doesn't seem too concerned about her mental state either way ("Kids killing each other")

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
- Spoiler:
- Yeah, it's interesting how they actually do a good job of showing the elements that are fucked up in the characters', but from the way they tell the story, it comes off like they want you to only see the good part where it's just a way of connecting and exploring that some people don't understand, like you say Boomers and online friends. Except for those very rare moments where they specifically show them panicking or upset, they present deep dive gaming as totally wonderful and they really never show anything that questions how healthy the way they engage with it is outside of the mom whose questioning they completely invalidate by tying it so absolutely to her status-seeking mean rich person-ness.
It feels almost like they subconsciously understand the characters better than they consciously do so that the explicit text is just "yay, this is a wonderful thing that it's great for them to have in their lives even if there was a scary bit," while how they try to show that undermines what they're explicitly saying and actually tells a much more convincing and interesting character portrait than they allow to happen explicitly.

S2E23
- Spoiler:
- Kirito IRL hanging out with the nerd squad. Coolest kid in school in VR, fucking dork IRL even in a school where everyone plays VR
- TFW Shoulder Waifu
- "Avoid sudden movements" and the first thing she does is suddenly move
- Yuuki's "Uwaa" reaction when Asuna walks into a classroom full of students ;_;
- The one thing I think SAO does terribly is showing the real world implications of being trapped in the death game. Like all of these people in the classroom where in it together there, they could've done so much more just showing that
- Teacher throwing her right into the deep end with public reading already
- She's imagining she's there, just fuck me up already
- Went to Yuuki's house, the pain don't stop ;_;
- Asuna has to be the wife, otherwise her name will be Yuuki Yuuki
- Making Mom play video games
- Asuna and Kirito's VR house is like her Grandparents one IRL
- Video games don't let you hide your tears
- (They missed a huge opportunity for Asuna to be like "Yeah, when people were dying and we were trying to beat the game and save everyone's lives, this is where we went to escape.)

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E23
- Spoiler:
-this is so adorable
-putting her on the spot first thing! I thought this teacher was supposed to be nice! D:
-good choice of passage to read, it echoes her feelings without being so on the nose it's dumb
-Asuna's eyes filling with tears at the reading
-Yuuki's old house
-Asuna, just because you're married with a ~10-yr-old child at 17 doesn't mean everyone should marry in high school! Also, you don't want to marry for money, but Yuuki should marry just to get someone to buy her old house for her!? Hypocrite!
-proposing to Asuna, Kirito's not the only one who gets a harem!
-Huh, wonder why they made her Christian
-Asuna not being able to hear her mother's voice even when talking to her, it's a nice way of expressing that relationship, feels like she's just now hitting on how to understand feelings that she's known for a long time but hasn't been able to articulate. It's funny how this show jumps back and forth between character writing that's very clumsy & cliched at times and then quite deft and delicate at other times.
-"It's fine to pretend if it means you spend more time smiling," that's fucked up in a really sad way, especially when this season has been a lot about the opposite, letting people see who you really are even when it's not happy
-Yuuki reaching out her hand to touch Asuna's face on a screen
-making her mom come into the VR world to be able to talk to her
-"I want you to see my world"
-d-does this mean that you don't actually get to select/design your character, it just assigns one to you?? It didn't seem like enough time for the mom to choose anything.
-using her safe home in the game world to represent a safe home waiting for her mom in the real world and what it takes to make that exist for the people you love
-the game doesn't let you suppress wanting to cry (except, I feel like there were times when people were feeling teary but suppressing it in SAO, surely??)
-they did a pretty good job with the mom's transformation given that they'd painted themselves into a corner already with how they portrayed her before, it's a little much, but it would have been impossible to have as much change as the story needs and have it feel fully realistic for the character because they just went too cartoonish with how awful she was at the beginning
Good episode! I wish they could have used some of this finesse from the beginning, but still, they're making it worth riding out the bumpy parts.

SAO when it's good really hits the right spot ;_;
- Spoiler:
- Getting the gangs together
- Killed another boss together <3
- Yuuki beats Kirito again
- They went on a trip with Yuuki on the shoulder ;_;
- Pls no
- They're inside her sealed room, she's done
- Passing along the ultimate original sword skill, Mother's Rosario ;_;
- And Asuna will pass it on as the saikyo densetsu online fucking dork nerd skill forever ;_;
- The userbase coming to pay homage to Zekken ;_;
- (So we never watched this part. Alfheim Online is kind of based on different races of fairies competing with each other, and during the second part of SAO, Kirito befriended or dueled all the faction leaders, so we kind of saw a bunch of them showing up and it's assumed they were the ones who put the call out to gather so many players)
- Awkward IRL guild meeting
- One of the Sleeping Knights made it ;_;
- The caretaker of Dr Kayaba/Heathcliff's body while Aincard was ongoing sent the designs for the medicuboid
- Kirito weirdly wanting to continue Dr Kayaba's work
SAO when it's good really hits the right spot ;_;

S2E2
- Spoiler:
-Aww, harem merger! The Sleeping Knights' illness isn't keeping them separate from everyone else anymore
-Finally spotted Sinon, I was beginning to think they were just pretending she'd joined the harem
-Kirito having dinner with Asuna's family feels like a little too much of a change to be believable, but still, it's nice
-They let her beat Kirito again!!! Even though he basically said before that he never fights full-out anymore so he's never really beaten, it still kind of makes me worry that Yuuki's going to die soon because even that is too much of a threat to Kirito's superiority
-Girls' trip with shoulder-device Yuuki
-Oh nooooo, revenge of Gary Stu
-Seems so harsh to let go of her hand in the real world to speak to her in the game world I sure hope Asuna's right that Yuuki's trying to say she wants to use the medicube and isn't just denying her her last request and moment of human touch in the real world because Asuna's so focused on the VR world and assumes everyone else would be too I mean, obviously the show would have her be right b/c it would suck too much otherwise, but I don't feel confident it'd be right if it was real.
-"Your blade will never disappear." *sob*
-Seeing them all crying almost made me cry too
-gets a massive honour guard because everyone wants to pay tribute to the strongest fighter in the world, this is all heart-stab after heart-stab
-she doesn't need a reason for being alive, just being happy right now is enough
-seeing her big sister in that last moment
-"I lived here." Aaaaa, my heart
-Siune got better, feels kind of bittersweet because we wanted that to happen for Yuuki too
-"I don't know if it's okay for me to be the only one still here," oh no, all the others died already??
-Oh, whew, she didn't mean they all died, that would have just been too heartbreaking
-Yuuki's testing helped give the medical full-dive technology to the world
-why the FUCK is everyone still fine with accepting full-dive VR technology from unknown sources!?!? No surprise it's related to Kayaba, but even if it wasn't, how did no one learn a single fucking thing from SAO???!? This competes with Kirito's Gary Stu-ness as the most aggravating thing about this show, it's fucking ridiculous
-her sword planted by the tree :'(
-and now they're using the shoulder device for Yui
-As SAO survivors they have the responsibility to watch what happens with the blurring of real and VR, but basically by continuing Kayaba's fuckery and hoping it'll only be used for good
-too bad they didn't bring Siune and the other surviving Knights to the picnic. But Yui in the shoulder device makes it feel like Yuuki's there in spirit, at least.
The beginning was pretty shaky, but they really pulled off that ending with a perfect sword through the heart.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
Some people think it's the best arc overall because how deep the feels are ;_;
I think it's one of the best because of how different it was. The original is incredible because of the setting, Death Gun is great because of the tension, this one is great because of the feels (I also think the Ordinal Scale movie does all of the above well and it's really good in its own right, and Gun Gale Online is the most entertaining but we haven't done those. Alicization is weird because except for a few episodes, you could've named it a completely different series)

Yeah, this one definitely brought maximum feelings! It could have been too much if they'd done it a little less well, because they really leaned hard on those emotional buttons, but they absolutely pulled it off. Both this one and Death Gun had some really good bits about the real world/fantasy world/death game issue, even though I do wish they'd focus on those issues a little more (and not ignore the problems whenever they want to just make it happy); in general, I find this a series that mixes in too many generic/simplistic wish fulfillment elements that dilute the really good stuff, but I'm always almost surprised by how good it is when they get it right.
