Re: Rants
I am having a hard time dealing with my anger about how the universe seems to be conspiring against me having a phone. First, I spent a couple weeks at a psych ward and the staff lost my phone, plus they didn't give me the $20 I came in with back. I had to replace it, so I was out even more money, and it took three trips to Best Buy to get it activated because their system kept glitching. It was only working for a few days when one of my roommates at the shelter I was staying at took it.
My other roommates said she took it while I was asleep. Since I have sleep/energy problems that make me need to rest a lot, and make it difficult to get myself up, I really relied on my phone for the alarm in it that helped me manage those things. Regular alarms don't work as well for me because I also get really bad brain fog, and the cell phone alarm was one I could manage even when I was foggy.
Thanks to her, my sleep/energy problems are even more out of whack, I have had difficulties being able to maintain contact with friends, it's harder to access social services, and there are other complications, such as that I would also set additional alarms to help me remember to get important things done. I tried going to an agency to sign up for a free phone, only to find out that the free phone people only come once every several weeks, if that, and nobody knows if or when they will be back. This whole fiasco has just disrupted my life so much on multiple levels across the board, and I am beyond angry about it. It's nice having a venting thread to talk about this.

If you have two conflicting studies, you don't go "hurr yours is partisan", you take a closer look at methodology, sample group, ambiguous phrasing and the like. Holy crap, I hope I never grow so jaded that I start thinking like that.

OMG Mom, I know that life would be better with a garage and a family room, but I had to choose between that and a bedroom for each kid and a second bathroom. And I know that the schools in my new town aren't as good as the schools where you live, but I managed to get into the best elementary school in the town. And I know that it's easier to have carpet installed before I move in than to wait a few years, but having it installed now costs money now which I would really rather save in case the furnace breaks.
You and dad were raising 2 kids on 2 salaries. I am raising 3 kids on one salary. I need to have lower standards! Maybe STFU?

Argh! It would be THE perfect community for me to dip my social toes into, given that they seem to share many of my interests and values, if the community's central ideas weren't so misguided and stupid.

"Successful", he says, but the emotion behind it tells me he really means "lucky". He's not wrong, either way, except that I could say the same of him, and feel similarly. It depends on one's definitions, and on what sorts of things one feels strongly about....

Some guy on Reddit just pulled the "we're both equally entitled to our opinions" and "stop censoring me!" lines just because I expressed disagreement.

I want to ask someone out and I'm petrified even though they are friend and I really shouldn't be because they actually showed interesting in going to this particular thing.

Really?
Mom, really?
You *knew* there was a problem with the landline at my house. You *knew* I probably wasn't aware of that.
I don't respond for less than *one* day to your mail and whatsapp and shit because I left my mobile in my bedroom to be distracted less (since I thought important calls would come over the landline), and you call the neighbour to see if she could check in on me?!
Oh sure, you say you were afraid I had "fallen" or something, don't fucking insult my intelligence. This was a suicide watch. Because you finally realize that I don't feel well and my eternal smile is fake as shit.
Well, newsflash: It's been three years since I put together a fool proof exit plan. I can hardly tell you that, but I'm not suddenly going to execute that if I managed to soldier on through those three stinking years.

The herpes stigma really, REALLY pisses me off. The majority of people have herpes whether they know it or not, and the vast majority of cases have little to no symptoms. It's probably the least scary STD in terms of symptoms all things considered (even certain HPV strains can cause cancer in women).

OMG I know! :shout: As someone who got oral herpes as a baby (likely from my father) and had coldsores ever since I was a child, it sucks because I say the word "herpes" and I get the "you dirty slut" look. Especially in winter when my lips get chapped a lot I'm prone to a lot of breakouts.
Frankly, I don't know why we stand by and let this stigma continue: I believe if we stand together and speak out we can work to a better future, one free from the stigma and misinformation that runs rampant today! We need Walk for a Cure type fundraisers! We need B-list celebrities and MTV reality stars to put out a headline grabbing (oh, okay, only in their own egos) campaign called "Herpes Sux!" where they challenge their barely literate twitter followers to pose for selfies with a painted on cold sore! (And plenty of awkward blowjob jokes too.) Oh, and we need a ribbon! No awareness raising campaign is complete without a ribbon! I propose white, with a reddish pink border--the colors of a puss-filled cold sore!
Alright, who's in?!
(Though I have to say my boyfriend's exclamation of "Oh fucking hell no after being sexually active for two decades now I am not getting herpes from the virgin no way no how" when I told him was pretty hilarious. )

My mother used to pull the "I'm entitled to my opinion" line all the time when we'd argue about the insane shit she believed was normal in terms of parenting. While I agree in principle that she's entitled to her own opinion, I also believe that if your opinion leads you to take certain actions, and those actions cause very real harm, you don't get to wash your hands of the harm you caused by saying "Well, I'm entitled to my own opinion" the way she did.

Not to derail the rants thread, but my go to response to, "I'm entitled to my opinion" is "And I am entitled to disagree with you" and, if I am feeling especially feisty, I will add after "you", " and think your opinion is based on erroneous assumptions and faulty information. "

Leaving your interweb safety in the hands of reformed trolls who do the exact same pestering but now at the proper targets just seems unwise. Can't wait for this stuff to backfire.

The fire alarm on the building next door has been going off for two and a half hours. Not a normal school-bell alarm, either. A screeching digital klaxon interspersed with a man talking urgently but unintelligibly, aka full-on dystopian panic sounds. According to the grumpy firemen over there, it will continue for another two hours minimum. Because this is how they are testing it. On purpose. At maximum volume. Starting at eight in the fucking morning. LOVE YA, HONOLULU FD.

Or, if you'd like a shorter version: "Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to my opinion that you're full of shit."

Dear city, public transportation, local BIAs, etc. Every bench you take away for construction or rearranging or who the hell knows what and don't bother to put back means a small corner of the world that was open to me becomes a hostile space, a waste to struggle across where there was once an oasis. There are dozens upon dozens of people like me who relied on that resting point, to whom it gave freedom, independence, safety. Don't tell me it's just a bench.

Some time pretty soon I am going to have to insist on taking three consecutive weekends to not visit anyone I already know. One to recover from all this spending time around people, one to deal with all the errands and chores I've been putting off through this mess of weekend Events, and one... on the off chance it's suddenly become possible that Meeting New People can be a good thing again. Occurs to me it's now been almost five months since I even tried, except in the context of trying to hoodwink/fast-talk people into employing me.

Oh, cousin. I didn't "not see" your father's friend request on Facebook. I've been ignoring it. It was a few years ago, so I'm not sure if you remember, but I was happy to be his Facebook friend...when he was alive. I get that you use the page to post happy memories about him. I'm glad it brings you comfort, and I'd never criticize you for grieving in your own way. Can we just say I'm grieving in mine and that our processes are a little different?

Re: Rants
I hate my hair.
The younger girls at work have either put in fake hair, or flat-ironed theirs which jokingly brought everyone to a discussion of seeing me with long hair next. I bummed myself out in the process of explaining that while my hair goes to the middle of my back, no one will ever see this because it curls too tightly, and being tender-headed means no flat-irons.
I'm coming to terms with the nature of my hair slowly, but not being able to style it myself is a blow against my sense of competency.

Re: Rants
I find it really tiring to be around touchy-feely people as it is, but they are almost always touchy-feely in spaces where telling them to cut it out makes me look like an arsehole to point out I'd rather not be hugged or touched in any way.
I can settle for handshakes with guys because they don't initiate anymore than that. Women however are more likely to go for hugs or continental kisses. 90%+ of the time I'd really rather not be involved in either of those, but it's hard to say "no thanks" without it immediately being personal. Not to mention I've essentially faked not caring for so long that suddenly 'giving a shit' now just makes it look even worse.
Ugh. I hate me sometimes.

I am being required to attend a mandatory group counseling session tomorrow. With people I don't trust at all. To work on long-standing problems that I absolutely know can not be fixed by one session. During the same time as the one pre-scheduled activity that I was looking forward to for this whole week.
There is no way that is going to go well.
