Re: Attack on Titan
S4E13/E72
I guess something happened, kind of?
- Spoiler:
-Levi's got no tolerance for Zeke's shit.
-Nicolo's anti-Eldian? I thought he'd been a voluntary defector? Wait, from Jean's reaction it looks like this is new, so I guess it's either to do with Sasha's death or something secret. This character is not well-established enough for personality change to be used to convey something's up.
-well that was the worst faking sick to sneak around I've ever seen
-they think saying they killed Sasha will make them trust him, oops
-Nicolo nearly kills two children with a smashed wine bottle, eesh
-"We've gotta at least get the kids out of the forest." Huh. If I'd had to list all the people who I thought would be likely to be the first one to refuse to continue the cycle of violence, Sasha's dad wouldn't have been on there at all because I wouldn't have thought of his existence.
-so the blond girl was basically encouraging them to find other Marleyans (which presumably she'd have had to have assumed might mean they'd try to plot against Paradis), but as soon as she learns the person they killed was someone who was important to her, she's going at Gabi with a knife? Why does no one have any in-betweens??
-wtf, Zeke's spinal fluid was in the wine? Did I miss something about paralysis, I don't remember that?
-Levi makes a facial expression, and it's disillusionment
-So I guess now basically Zeke can turn half the military into Titans?
-How did Eren get so good at seeing through people's plans? They're making out like he's a long-game genius instead of a haphazard rage machine normally backed up by people who can plan.
-Also, how is the military and Hange and everyone so incompetent all of a sudden? They can't even stop all of their high-level scouts from getting held at gunpoint in a restaurant, they can't handle a pretty low-key protest of 50 people, they've spent half the season being outmaneuvered by two-bit characters and Eren. Hange better have a really fucking good trick up her sleeve. And maybe Armin, but I'm not really sure what his goal is right now so kind of not sure if he'd have had any reason to be coming up with a plan.
-And all these dramatic betrayals and surprise changes from characters we've barely spent any time on is just kind of like "...okay?"
-Eren just shows up bleeding out of his hand like 'whassuuup, free-bleeding over everything is a great time-saver."
-Mikasa looking conflicted, as if they hadn't spent the last 3 seasons establishing that Mikasa will fight anyone or anything, including her superiors, her other friends (barring Armin, probably) or the whole military for Eren without one millisecond of hesitation. This is honestly the thing I'm finding weirdest this season, it just seems so out of character.
I guess something happened, kind of?

S4E14
Oops, it looks like the live broadcast of the episode happened during an Earthquake so most of the episode got out but not all it. They'll air both of them in full next week.
- Spoiler:
- Maybe don't threaten Mikasa, Eren. If anyone can kill you even as a Titan, it's her
- "Bertholdt's taken over your brain"
- Spooky, Eren has magic powers that can make Levi and Mikasa fight for him
- Hmmm, wasn't Levi complaining about all the times he protected Eren too?
- This is really dumb
- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *Runs* Holy shit
- EYYYYY TITANS
- Levi's absolutely gonna massacre the boys
- These crazy stupid Titan runs
- Fucking YUP, Levi plays for keeps, their deaths WILL mean something
- NOT AGAIN YES FUCKING AGAIN
- (Could live without the rap)
- Fucking BRUTAL, suck it Zeke
- "I won't kill you" Come on, man, you totally would

Re: Attack on Titan
S4E14/E73 Part 1 (to ~16 min)
- Spoiler:
-ohshit, Armin's got Bertholdt's memories and thus his feelings, who they are is affected by their Titans. If they'd done it a little less over-the-top, it'd be a pretty good reveal. Though also it'd have helped if Bertholdt's interest in Annie hadn't only been established as a surprise mention out of nowhere one time a few seasons back.
-they didn't set up the Ackerman thing anywhere near well enough for this to work, and I don't think they've ever shown Mikasa being particularly obedient/protective of Historia, either. Not to mention that she actively fought to kill previous royals.
-ugh, this 'Ackerman identity takes over' thing just gets sillier and clumsier the more they talk about it (to be fair, so is almost everything Ackerman). With Titans it works (or at least it would work if they weren't taking it to a dumb degree) but "you're part of a mysterious badass family" means that your personality gets completely overwrittten when your powers are activated is just too big a leap. They almost had my interest for a sec with the Armin-Berthold reveal, but they've lost it again immediately. And like, why have the exact same revelation for Armin/Titans and for Mikasa/Ackermans, it ruins the drama of Titan mysteries to have something totally different have the exact same effect, it's like they hadn't wanted to just hand out Titans to everyone but still wanted Mikasa to get in on the drama of having a Titan. And it feels more solid with the Titans b/c they have a mythology and a reason for existing, so you can believe more extreme things about them, the Ackermans don't have that support to make them believable for the same degree of fantastical elements.
-Eren's being a jerk, dunno if it's new personality he's gotten from new Titans, something Zeke did to him, or if he's meant to be trying to provoke them into something, or if they genuinely feel they've established these elements to Eren's personality to a point where learning about Titan/Ackerman personality overwrites would be enough to make him act this way. If there's a point to it, I wish they'd get there already.
-GO ARMIN!! I don't care if this is out of character or not, I'm fucking thrilled to see Armin punching someone!
-Guess Levi doesn't drink?
-why are these Titans so fast and effective? When we've seen Zeke-made Titans before they've been barely functional to not-at-all functional, badly made and mis-proportioned. I could buy them being more effective because they're Scouts, but surely they should still have the physical problems?
-Zeke thinks Levi can't take down a gazillion surprise Titans. At least all this mess the last few episodes has made me find Zeke so overpowered and superior that I'm seriously looking forward to Levi wiping that smug look off his face (Actually, one thing I have to give the show credit for, is that they've always done a great job balancing Levi and Mikasa being impossibly badass without overusing them or making it annoying and Mary Sue-feeling )
- HERE IT COMES
-"Oh come on! Not again" Levi just saved this episode
-grooooossss. And the rap song is weird here.
-YES! LEVI! FUCKING GET HIIM!!!!
For a few moments while Levi was kicking Beast Titan's ass this was actually worth watching, but everything else is such a mess that they keep upending more trashcans into. And presumably this new Ackerman thing means Levi's not going to be able to go against Eren?

S4E14/E73 Part 2
- Spoiler:
-having the new recruits beat their old commander to death, okay, so they're establishing that the Jaegerists are awful. It's helpful having some clear guidance on how they're intending us to react to something, b/c I mostly have no idea.
-Also nice to see Levi taking decent precautions when he left Zeke alive, that's so rare.
-this is just sort of unpleasant. I don't really need to see Zeke lying in his own vomit having pieces sliced off him
-oh my god his childhood memory is of playing baseball, that makes the army-destroying baseball throws even more hilarious, I don't even feel bad about it anymore
oh no, next week is just gonna be Zeke flashbacks, I don't caaaarrrrreeeee

- Ask and ye shall receive, dipshit kids

Re: Attack on Titan
S4E15/E74
Can't believe this is what they decided to spend the second-last episode on. I kind of wish they'd just done a single-episode summary of this entire season, because a tl;dr wouldn't honestly be any worse or less compelling than what they've done with the entire 15 episodes.
- Spoiler:
-oh god are we really spending more time on the fact that Eldians are oppressed?? They've crammed all the plot into about 3 episodes and everything else has been "hey, did you know Eldians are downtrodden?"
-so all Jaegers suck at training (and yet somehow end up the most awesome people ever)
-we've seeen alll this befooooooororrrree, we don't need to see it again for Zeke, why do the writers have so little ability to tell which aspects of their story are the interesting ones???
-oh my god, Beast titan was useless for war until Zeke brought baseball talent to it, this is so fucking dumb
-beware a person who thinks they're one of the only decent people in the world
-his backstory is so ham-fisted, there's no skill at characters here at all
-wants to commit "euthanasia" of all Eldians. Wow, this is... concerning, given that this is the character who the main character apparently believes knows the truth and the right path.
-So apparently Eren was just like "yeah, let's annihilate all Eldians, good idea" and this is possibly all they're going to give us for why he was immediately on board with that and why he's changed so much?? What the fuck, just "wants to destroy all Titans" is not enough to lead directly into that. I assumed they were at least going to give us a little bit of reason or leadup for his total change. I'm guessing it's probably a lie and he intends at the last moment to do something to save everyone while getting rid of titans (I hope so, since the alternative is that this really was a stealth anti-semitic fable all along ) but A. they've never established him to be that smart, and B. it's just not good.
-oh shit, Levi's precautions weren't good enough, kaboom

- And apparently has no mouth but he must scream?
- That seems like a sloppy way to digest someone
- I will miss this intro at least
- God damn, Yelena, just murdering the dude for the disrespect like that
- HO SHIT PIECK-CHAMA JUST CASUALLY WALKING IN
- Pieck-chamaaaa, kill'em all <3
- So close to eating Eren

Re: Attack on Titan
How is that a final season, then??! I'm honestly kind of disappointed, given how bad it's been I'd rather just get the ending over with, but I feel like I've been invested long enough that it'd bug me to drop out now. And it would have been nice to think at least they had the excuse of not having been given long enough to wrap it all up.

Re: Attack on Titan
I still haven't gotten around to watching this season. Kept meaning to find a time to catch up and join in the discussion, but then got busy with work and haven't had the chance or the energy to do it. I'm avoiding the spoiler sections obviously, but it makes me kind of sad to hear that this season has been disappointing.
Granted, since the end of the previous season, I kind of suspected this was going to be one of those shows where the build up of the mystery would be far more compelling than the actual reveals. So maybe it's good to know that I can keep my expectations low whenever I finally do watch it.
And it sounds like there's no rush for me to catch up, since there's such a long wait until the next part of the season.

Re: Attack on Titan
I would recommend waiting. The first part of Season 4 was very similar to the first part of Season 3, a lot of humans talking and a lot of silly plot twisting and not a lot of Titan-ry outside of a moment or two. Even if you end up finding all of Season 4 a disappointment (I do know people who are still immensely into it so it's not like the second season of Promised Neverland where it outright fell apart, it just didn't hit me and didn't hit Enail the right way for a lot of it), at least you won't have to wait for something to finally happen like we do right now

Re: Attack on Titan
This is why I prefer to binge-watch most shows, honestly. A lot of people complained about the first half of season 3, but I ended up binging it and the slower pace didn't really bother me. Then when I watched the second half of season 3 on a weekly basis along with you guys, I found some parts to be annoyingly dragged-out, despite the majority of it being more action-heavy and exciting.
Long waits between seasons or mid-season, even with a cliffhanger, don't seem to bother me as much as just having to wait a week or two between every episode, which I feel kills the momentum a lot more.

Re: Attack on Titan
S4E16/E75
- Spoiler:
-where did this Titan come from, that can't possibly be Levi's Titan form?? Did he turn someone else into a Titan?? Or just one he failed to kill?
-omg gross, what the fukc?!
-titan puts him in its stomach? And wisps of smoke, but it's not clear if that's from this other Titan or Zeke regenerating. Or why it's doing that - that seems like there's some kind of intention there, which only a sentient or controlled Titan would have, but it didn't really seem like Zeke intended that to happen, so is Levi somehow controlling that Titan?
-Seems weird they're having Jean be the one to try and think logically about what could be making Eren act this way, they never let Armin do any thinking this season
-Yelena shooting her subordinate for calling Eldians demons, either she needs their cooperation, or she just really cares about politeness
-Jeez, and now Pieck got in here this easily? How the fuck are all the guards so incompetant this season?
-I like how agreeably Pieck just admits she can't shoot him, she's got this great bleak, offhand cheerfulness that comes off like she's just so far into exhaustion and despair that everything becomes a little funny. I'd say I'd like to see more of her, but then they'd probably ruin her given how they've been going this season.
-She's for sure lying to get Eren onside, but I could believe she genuinely does want to take down Marley in the end as well, if she can see a shot.
-Pieck brutally destroying Gabi's faith that being a 'good Eldian' can save them
-Armin being moved to sobbing by the genocide plan Nice to finally see some intelligence on his part
-Eren's neck looks really fucked up, the vertebra at the base is way above the shoulders, like his neck is double-length
-JAW FROM BELOW
-Gabi's faith un-destroyed. And Pieck doesn't believe in Marley, but she believes in their comrades. (Even the Marleyan ones who treat them like dirt?)
-Goddamn, we're ending the season before the damn fight?!
This episode felt slightly better than the others. Most of what happened felt like it had a point and was mostly coherent, and there was less of the weird acting where you're not sure what's on purpose and what's bad writing. It's enough that I feel some enthusiasm about another season instead of just resentfully being dragged into it by sunk cost. But for a story about war and Titan-fighting, there sure wasn't much of those things this season.

Re: Attack on Titan
Here we go, I guess.
S5E1/E76
Shit's actually happening! Maybe they'll do this right!
S5E1/E76
- Spoiler:
-Did they fucking kill Levi in that blast last season??? GOD FUCKING DAMN, he was one of the only characters that was still acting remotely in character and not randomly incompetent!
-wait, Hange's not letting them inspect him, he's still alive. His eyes looked pretty dead, though. Might just be bad art-acting, there was a lot of that last season.
-I don't remember who that Titan they're holding at gunpoint is. This is one of the few times I could have gone for a recap episode.
-ohh, that's the other Titan that took Zeke and it was to protect him from the blast. Which would presumably be at his command, then. So I don't know why he seemed surprised by it.
-Yes! Go Hange, taking Levi and running for it!
-vision of a girl covering him in sand? Weird.
-at least they've got a fighting-spirit metal OP song going for them, however the season goes
-HOly fuck, Jaw slicing off Pieck's arm as she reaches for him to rescue them! I guess he believed her talk about being anti-Marleyan? Or something??
-and that throw-flopping herself off the wall? wtf, she's a Titan, isn't she used to losing body parts?
-Eren's still a loose cannon who doesn't take orders, that's at least something him-like
-YES! REINER EREN FIGHT!!
-Horse Titan is even creepier when he talks
-those Hammer fists really improve Eren's ability to take on Reiner
-Spikes from everywhere!
-Horse with a gun!
-Jeez, the gunners killed an amazing number of redshirt scouts in two seconds
-Reiner thinking "you've suffered enough" at Eren while trying to kill him
-Connie losing his shit over too many betrayals
-The Marleyan conscripts were never in on the Jaeger plan
-Mikasa's completely lost her confidence knowing that she's just been following the Ackerman programming all this time (that Ackerman programming thing is still dumb as fuck, though)
-Ohh, finally, Armin thinks Eren's faking it
Shit's actually happening! Maybe they'll do this right!

Re: Attack on Titan
S5E1
- Spoiler:
- L-Levi?
- If you want to kill Levi, you should probably shoot him in the face a few times even if he's dead, just in case
- I don't remember what happened last season so I the Levi Titan sucking in steam probably means something but I don't remember what
- I like how they're aiming their pea-shooters at a Titan as if that will do anything at all if it gets back up
- Ayyyyyy, Beast Titan. That's right, they were going to do something but I forget what
- "Zeke, what happened." "I don't know." Yeah, me too
- Maybe the intro song will be grow on me eventually
- Keep Pieck-chama safe, guys
- Pieck's arm getting bonked off and then her comically falling over the edge had me loling
- Awwww shiet, Eren vs Reiner Round 3(?)
- M-Magath hates the whatever they were called people but hugs Gabi because she was safe
- PIECK-CHAMA HEADSHOTS EREN
- Probably just let Eren die, good guys
- Good guy, Onyankopon
- Oh right, I forgot Mikasa was like an 8 foot tall amazon now
- Armin pulling the "No guys, he's secretly a good guy and just trying to protect us all" card, I'm down for retconning all this stupid shit away and getting back to good non-action stuff
- Man, the fucking animation on some of these explosions is crazy-good

Re: Attack on Titan
S5E2/E77
- Spoiler:
-I so appreciate that they're dismissing all that dumb shit Eren said last season as an obvious lie to skip past, that I'm actually happy they repeated that section in the second episode Also, Mikasa thinks it has to be true because she gets headaches sometimes? Oh shit, I guess half the population is Ackermans! Murder Waifu might not be too bright
-Oh please please please let us get a happy ending composed of everyone punching Eren in the face
-I like the way Reiner's internal dialogue while trying to destroy Eren is all "just stop, just go to sleep," just pure exhaustion, you really feel like it's talking about himself more than Eren, like he's past the point where he's capable of doing anything other than what his exhausted brain thinks will make it all stop.
-you can almost physically feel the story warping itself around Zeke whenever he's on screen to try and make him awesome, can I switch my happy ending of everyone punching someone in the face to Zeke?
-Cart Titan's bare butt sticking out the back of the tank-backpack kind of makes me lol
-Gabby's really dominating the "meaningful character growth that actually affects things" market here
-Woo! Pixis is alive! I totally forget what happened to him but I feel surprised he's alive so I assume he fake-died last season
-Yay! Pixis is still competent! Go Pixis! They seem to be dropping last season's "everyone is useless because Jaegars are so brilliant" thing, what a relief. I think I'm gonna just start pretending last season didn't happen.
-who the fuck is the blond girl with Mikasa? Maybe I shouldn't have pretended so hard
-Mikasa's cold voice when she says she's leaving the scarf behind. I don't think it'll happen, but it'd make an interesting character arc if she couldn't forgive Eren for how cruel he was to her even though she knows it was for a plan.
-Yelena's fucking face
-Falco's brother getting ready to kill Falco's captor and it's Gabby who pulls him back
-She finally gets it and breaks down
-Falco confesses his guilt and his feelings
-him saying he didn't want her to have the tragedy of getting the Titan because he wants to marry her really makes it seem way less noble and selfless than if it was just generally because he loved her (and also, has it not occurred to him that if he dies young that'll end their potential relationship just as much as if she does?)
-Ripping off his armband, fucking badass moment
-Pieck
-Pieck!! Zeke through the neck! (Though, she can leave behind a skeleton?? That's pretty different from anything established previously)
I think they just might pull off this season! I'm a little worried they're going to finish off all the interesting stuff too early and land up with a boring ending of stuff we don't care about, but other than that, the coherence is back, the characters are back, there's actual action and exciting shit happening, this is very promising!

Re: Attack on Titan
S5E3/E78
- Spoiler:
-that brutal smashing of the guy in Jaw Titan
-Reiner sharing a memory with Jaw?
-Are we really supposed to believe for a second that Zeke isn't the sort of person to involve innocent children????
-Bye everyone who drank the spinal fluid
-we haven't had that visceral horror of titans just going around eating totally unprepared people for ages, it's just as brutal still
-oh god, the Falco titan is horrifying, moreso because they made him weird and badly-made looking like the other ones instead of trying to make him cooler so you take it seriously
-MI-FUCKING-KASA! YEAH!
-Reiner finally giving up
-Jaw's "I'm better than you" death, poor Reiner has spent like 4 seasons trying to give up and failing
-since when can they all leave skeletons instead of the hardened-statues?
-WOAH WHAT THE FUCK
-GABBY KILLED EREN WHAT THE FUCK
-back to the cycle of revenge for her, so much for character development
-and oh god, that one seems pretty hard for them to take back, if they don't who's gonna be the main character for the rest of the season, please don't be Zeke
-"I'd love a firm handshake right now"
-he's got no depth perception you asshole!
-oh wait, the Coordinate where all Paths meet sounds like the kind of thing that brings people back reborn, I was just starting to get into the idea of the consequences of him really dying here
-don't really get why a vow renouncing war affects Zeke but not Founding Titan. But I suppose it's probably something that I missed because it was boring and I didn't pay attention, so I'm not gonna blame them for that one.
-FINALLY Eren tells him where to shove his fucked up plan!
-Ymir walks right past him
-this whole "but wait, Zeke's actually masterminded past the BoringStuff again for MoreBoringStuffReasons that don't make any sense!" thing is the usual dumbness, we'll never be free
-why is Ymir a slave with no free will? That seems so random
-to be fair, this does actually seem culmination-y enough that him coming back to life can be done in a meaningful way, but it'll probably involve a lot of boring talking and dumb shit too
Damn, I really believed we might be done with all the stupid shit and have an awesome final season.

S5E3
- Spoiler:
- Kinda feel bad for Galliard, getting hammer-punched into mush
- Pieck-chama swinging the cannon
- Zeke will totally drag kids into it
- YUP, HE WENT FOR IT
- Right on, we have Titans again
- Reiner gonna let Falco go for it?
- RIP Galliard, you were a bro ;_;> (I think? I don't remember any of this story stuff)
- Eren fucking YEETING out of the crystal casing
- TAKE THE SHOT GABI, END THIS STUPID STORYLINE
- OH FUCK SHE DID IT
- Zeke fucking caught his head, does that still count?
- Eyyyy, it did
