The news is reporting that Supreme Court Justice Scalia died of natural causes this morning.

I feel...relief?

I was once waiting on an on ramp and saw a fender bender gradually turn into a 6 car accident. I feel about the same way I did when I saw that first collision.

I'm no fan of Justice Scalia's jurisprudence, but this just made the presidential election several times stranger and more heated than it already was. I'm also curious to see whether the Senate allows President Obama to appoint a third justice who will swing the balance of the court or whether there will be some attempt to draw out the confirmation process for 11 months in hopes that a Republican president will be elected.

Doing so would show the Republicans for what they really are: Partisanship foremost above all things.

I would think that it would alienate a large number of swing voters. Holding the Supreme Court hostage for a year is ridiculous. Doesn't mean it won't happen, but I can imagine fewer bad faith acts on the part of the Republicans.

Oh, completely agreed that it would alienate swing voters and even many Republicans. I actually think we're one step closer to the party fracturing and a realignment than we were yesterday.

But I made the bad decision to sit through the Republican debate tonight, and I saw a lot of bad faith on display. I'm hoping McConnell's claim they won't confirm any Obama nominee, regardless of qualifications or ideology, is just posturing before negotiations. I'm not so sure, though. It seems like obstructing basic government functions has worked its way into the playbook.

Trump's starting to make noises about running as an independent. Because the big, bad GOP is being so unfair to him!

Please, Trump. Please run as an independent. It will split the Republican vote, and we won't have to worry whether Sanders or Clinton is more electable.

So Trump gets all 50 delegates from South Carolina even though he only had 32% of the vote? We're all screwed.

As a sign of how depressing the Republican candidates are, it occurred to me today that I'll kind of miss Jeb Bush.

I am pinning my hope on the fact that even if Trump wins, Congress will hamstring his presidency. He will embarass the country in public.... a lot.... and will give great propaganda to ISIS, but he will have no allies in Congress. They will dig in and bury him with procedure

Is it kind of messed up that my best case scenario is a government that does absolutely nothing for 4 years?

Congress can't stop everything, as we've seen with Obama having to navigate his way around Congress's inaction. Trump can issue a lot of executive orders. And foreign policy and military actions are mostly on him alone. The Supreme Court may be a better bet if the Republicans don't block a new Justice.

My best case scenario if Trump is elected by popular vote is that the electors for the first time in 200+ years do what they were created for and don't elect him president.

On the bright side, this is one Bush disaster that didn't kill anyone!

I think I'll be voting in my state's Republican primary. For Rubio. This Trump shite has to stop. And I really don't care who the Dem candidate is at this point. I'll vote for whoever it is in the general election.

Actually, almost immediately after that news, I kinda felt okay about Trump. This is why:

Believe me, I don't like either, but the reality of it? Trump is just a loud mouth that likes to talk a lot of shit. Cruz on the other hand is way more of a fucking maniac than Trump is. Don't like either, but the lesser of all them evils is probably Rubio, yeah...

Speaking of Rubio, I could go for some tacos...

Ted Cruz: even less popular among his colleagues than initially thought. Lindsey Graham apparently just said, ""If you kill Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial is at the Senate, no one will convict you."

I'm glad to see more people speaking out against Cruz. I mean, we all know Trump is bad, but one of the worst things about Trump is that he makes Ted Cruz look not-bad in comparison. Cruz is awful.

The whole thing is such a shit show. Trump is an opportunistic buffoon who thinks the president is a dictator, Cruz would be happy leading an Inquisition and making the US a Christian theocracy, Rubio is not as terrible, but that is all he is. Kasich would be a decent president, but has no chance. I do not really like either Democrat, but am going to vote for them since the alternative will likely be O_O.

Governor Christie just endorsed Donald Trump.

Really?

I'm not surprised. Christie is in his second term in a state with term limits and where his popularity ratings are abysmal. He wants a new job, and I'm guessing Trump promised him one at the federal level (I'm wondering if it might be Attorney General, since I doubt it's VP). I think it's more questionable why Trump would care about his support, but I suppose he's a more mainstream figure and a sitting governor, which he might use to deflect some criticism in the future.

Good point. I guess we'll just close that bridge when we come to it.
