Re: Joys and Good News
Cross-thread update:
Gave that talk today-- during the slot immediately after Mean Dude's plenary. His presentation sucked ass, and I heard several people grumbling about it. Mine went very well, I think, and I got many positive comments and very good questions. Mean Dude didn't even show up to my session. Never going to fear grumpy old jerks at conferences again.
Werel wrote:1. Get paper accepted to very good conference
2. Dance!
3. Look at list of plenary speakers for conference
4. See name of scholar who eviscerated you during question session of your first-ever conference talk a couple years ago
5. See that aforementioned mean guy is giving plenary on the exact same topic as your paper
6. Consider just staying home with your tail between your legs

Just got this for the show. Now I can carry all our gear and people in one trip. Its. . .an intimidating drive to say the least. Vintage 1972, manual steering, manual transmission, tops out at 55 mph but it fits our image perfectly. A bit scared its going to turn into a money pit but I got it cheap enough that I can flip it if I need to get out from under it.

Roommate has 4 months training out of state for his job. I love him, but am really grooving on house to myself. I am sure I will miss his company, but am loving not having to wear pants at home.

Hehehe, not having to wear pants at home is awesome. I live with my siblings and my mom and my brother and I are the only ones who don't wear pants.

Congrats, Con.
Also, made it back to Vegas and nothing exploded. Top speed of 55 on the highway is. . .fun. Its kind of like driving a whale.

Got the keys to new apartment today, and spent a couple of hours there. Brought some coffee from my favorite coffee place, which is now 50 meters rather than 500 meters away. Bought some household items from the – what do you call that in English, a place that's part of a nationwide chain where where you go to buy food and cleaning stuff and toilet paper and things like that – anyway, there is one in the building next to mine, with a lot of space and things laid out in a way that's very easy to navigate, and I love, love, love my apartment, and am constantly rediscovering how lucky I've been which the combination of price, size and location.

Re: Joys and Good News
I haz a date for Friday.
The score: we've hung out plenty already, and chemistry is pretty good, so I decided to give it a shot, and got a yes. Programme is live jazz, afterwards heading to the student association(her suggestion, and a perfect safeguard that in case things go to hell in a handbasket the eve can still be salvaged). Harsh reminder that I should do this more often to grind down the nerves.

If it also sells clothes it's a department store, otherwise it's a supermarket. Congratulations on the new apartment! Newapartmentfeeling is one of my favorites, when I can stand in the middle and look around at all my completely empty space that's uncluttered by furniture and belongings.

Wearable Tech show on Saturday - and I had no blow-ups and my piece did what I said it would! And last month I found out I won an award at a wearable art show for my piece last year.

Saw a pic of the ex and his fiance together, didn't feel a twinge. Whooooo! \o/
(reminder to self, that isn't to say it won't swing down again, but at least you finally cleared the woods once, you'll emerge again even if you stumble into it accidentally!)

I saved up enough of my food budget to be able to splurge on a bag of shrimp this week. I cooked them up today in a sauce I invented out of stuff I found in the fridge, and they were delicious

Supermarket then, thanks.
Having my mother over for coffee today. Which, since I haven't moved in yet, means that my mother and I go there together, drink some coffee, and then go back to her place. But I've had fun with figuring out then buying all I need to make coffee – like cups, a water boiler, dishwashing equipment, and, well, coffee.
Speaking of cups, something of a bird theme to my new home seems to be emerging from somewhere, possibly because I'm fond of birds.

My passion for upping my skills in Japanese has risen for some reason. I was suddenly able to make sense of a part of the grammar of the language I couldn't understand before, so maybe I'm just pleased about that.
Either way, I need to practice using it more somehow.

My dog is home and okay! The house was so lonely without him, so I'm glad he's back.
He's doing well and is his goofy, relaxed self! He did seem a little down yesterday when he was first brought home, but he's normal today!

Once in a while you meet a new friend who's so simpatico that days later, you're still smiling about it. Count that high on the list of things that make life worthwhile.
