I spent my birthday weekend camping at the beach with my boyfriend, and on Saturday we noticed a woman setting up a party all alone looking sad. Invited her to share a joint; no one showed up to her party. She fed us dinner from the untouched trays of food and sang me a birthday song and gave me a sarong as a gift, and in hugging me goodbye whispered in my ear "aloha is endless."

Hawaii is going to break my god damn heart.

I saw her at a signing once and she signed my Earthsea books. She said her favorite author was Tolkien. It was awesome.

Did you know that her mom wrote the Ishi of Two Worlds book?

Yeah, and her dad was the one and only Alfred Kroeber, anthropology superstar, which I assume is a large part of why she can write non-Earth humans in a way that feels like she's writing about humans rather than just 20th century Americans. Gosh she's such a treasure. Lovestruck

I have a confession to make. I'm seriously thinking of adding another dish for Thanksgiving. Why is this a confession? Well, I make all the food. Except the pie. All of it. And my husband kind of rolls his eyes at me continuing to make the things that aren't very popular (which doesn't matter to me because the things other people don't seem to like, I like a lot, so more for me) because he thinks I put too much effort in for people who don't appreciate it.

But I really want to try a new vegetable and don't want to give up any others. And right now I'm trying to figure out how I would even do that since I don't have more room in the oven.

So, I haven't told my husband. I'm keeping it a secret until the time actually comes. Because if I don't end up making it, then I haven't failed at it if I never told anyone, right?

(I make the following: Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry relish, mushroom stuffing, whipped butternut squash, green bean casserole, and roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon. I'm thinking of adding roasted carrots.)
