Re: Berserk
Totally agree, bomaye, the second movie WAS a million times better than the first
Would watch again, would even consider good enough to be part of my personal Berserk canon. Legitimately added some really nice moments, some good takes on an old story. Super glad I pressed on and didn't ditch out after 1.
- “Golden Age Arc 2: the Battle for Doldrey”:
-Everything about the animation is better in this movie. The CG is used to pretty good effect in the battles, they took the time to mostly do the faces well, especially at important moments, and the sudden shifts were nowhere near as distracting.
-Music's still p bad though
-Wow, Casca is really, really sucking during her period battle, and I’m actually kind of impressed at how bad she’s sucking! Making it obviously and notably a bad performance by her seems like it bolsters the “she’s usually really good at this” feeling.
-Damn, Adon is getting a LOT of time to monologue. He must be a fan favorite or something. (GODDAMN YOU IT’S CORBORLWITZ, NOT KOBRITZ These movies are giving me nerd purism heart attacks)
-Baahahaa when Adon has her cornered on the cliff and Guts comes to save her, his MUSCLE POP. Guts’ hilarious veiny muscle pop. Is this a comedy?
-Baaaaawwwwww Guts picking the bug out of Casca’s hair when she’s fever-fainted in the cave
-Casca’s flashback was done really really well, I think, including the increased violence. Getting the shit beat out of her face makes this a way more realistic and compelling scene than the more bloodless anime version. Her remembering the whole thing through a swollen eye and adrenaline/concussion dizziness draws you into the character so well, and makes it so much more sickening and scary, and the relief of Griffith so much more visceral… actually teared up at this, despite having seen/read this segment of this story a million times before.
-All the facial expressions and most of the voice acting in the cave is good too.
-Battle of Doldrey was neat, but I mostly zone out during long battle sequences, even in the manga.
-BUT: wow, the omission of Zodd is a p big deal, and I'm not sure I understand why they cut him. It wasn't for space--him throwing that sword takes like five seconds of screen time. And they include Skull Knight in 3, yeah? So it's not like they're paring down all the non-God Hand supernatural entities...
-Casca pulling off her helmet and shaking out her hair after the Doldrey battle…. The LEAST CASCA ACTION EVER. "Gotta shake out my 3.5" of greasy helmet hair like a beautiful lady, because at the conclusion of a major battle, my primary concern is making evident to the viewer that I AM FEMALE"
-Her killing Adon was much cooler than in the anime. Looked really cool.
-THE BALL THE BALL OH MY GOOD GOD
-Corkus being positive that everyone was making fun of his clothes
-Guts and Casca dancing, not even bothering with the formalities like everyone else, but just messing around and having a legitimately good time, brought big stupid tears to my eyes. Dammit I didn't think these movies could add new moments that were truly affecting and fit well with the story
-The morning departure looked beautiful. Nicely done.
-That Griffith/Charlotte scene... oh my goodness gracious. Yeah, seriously, looked like 80% of the film's budget, and somehow more salacious than actual porn. And like... extremely consensual, that's an important change. Makes it way easier for the viewer to buy Charlotte's fervent devotion to Griffith later, I guess?

I read it as like maybe 70-80% consensual? She put up the hands to push him away, was def in shock at the start, "No" in the "we shouldn't/we'll get in trouble" way and then he just kept forcing and she gave in

Re: Berserk
I get it. The anime's too much like your average shounen.
Lol at the Spoiled Brat Knights.
Didn't feel like Guts was much of a talker from reading the manga. Maybe that's 'cause I've read it too much like how I'd act.

Re: Berserk
Guys… is this, like… a comedy show?
- S2E2:
-Wow, okay, they’re just jumping right into Farnese and co. I think in the manga the Spoiled Brat Knights were on Guts’ tail for years, but this is TV, we got places to go and plot to do!
-Cannon-hand punching was hilarious.
-Most of these flashbacks feel sort of forced, but I can see how they might be deployed to good effect, like the memory of the hundred-man fight.
-Okay, but seriously. With each successive adaptation of this series, Casca gets significantly whiter. Totally normal brown in 1997. Weirdly lighter but still at least tan in the movies. Just. White. in this new show. I can’t decide whether I’m right to be pissed about this, like I guess it’s just an animation choice?, but at the same time, 1) that’s not Casca! 2) I can’t see why the only brown principal character needs to be made white.
-So stoked to see Serpico acting like Serpico. His voicing ain’t bad, and a lot of the background/reaction shots of him feel true to the character. (Serpico is my favorite of the New Party, largely cause he’s basically Bratty Judeau 2.0, but his backstory with Farnese gets at my heartstrings)
-Hermit, I also am surprised at how talkative Guts is in this show. I also read him as way more brusque in the manga. But since this is apparently a comedy show, at least a lot of his lines are legit funny and mesh with thecurtGuts sass I’d always pictured
-Farnese losing her shit
-Yep, getting right into the flagellating
-“Sorry, horse”
-Poor nipple-less Farnese
-SWEET final shot of Serpico and the ghosts
-One gripe: animation seems a little worse than last episode, and last episode’s wasn’t good. The cheapness is getting a little distracting, like when there’s a static shot of Griffith for 5 seconds and he’s just got a perfectly motionless head and only moving lips. Buuuuut what can you expect, guess this is a 20 year old property they were unlikely to dump much money into

Re: Berserk
It does kind of feel like a comedy.
- S2E2:
-Casca flashback I keep having a hard time recognizing her, though, the combination of never having pictured her with purple hair and her being so white.
-Every new translation of the 'sword/sheath/master' line sounds dirtier than the last
-What the hell is that Azan guy wearing on his helmet?! Between him and Pigtails Knight, these Holy Spoiled Brats people really have some style choice issues going on.
-I'll third that it's weird how much Guts talks in this show. Like, does he really care about the name and reputation of who he's fighting? That seems like the kind of thing other people would try to warn him and he'd ignore.
-Maybe being underestimated is what Pigtails is going for, she got a hit on Guts with it!
-I was just about to be impressed she's smart enough not to take chances, putting him in stocks and a ball-and-chain, without his mechanical arm, and then she said "what harm could he possibly do..." You foolish, foolish person.
-Just his eye, but the change when she mentions the Hawks. That was nicely done.
-The flashbacks are kind of forced, but they completely get me anyway, every damn time.
-Guts apologizing to the horse
-Not only does she have no nipples, but her boobs don't work right upside-down I guess CG boob physics still has a way to go
-Not being able to see elves if you're too...religious? closed-minded? seems strange somehow. This isn't really a world where wonderful things exist if only you believe I guess maybe we've been seeing things from down in the trenches with the mud and the demons up till now, and now we're getting a look at the world that's been insulated from that.
-I'm glad to hear Serpico is Bratty Judeau, because I think he's Judeau for a moment every time I see him.
At the start of the manga, Puck seemed like partly a device to help the viewer into the world when the main character is so angry and bloodthirsty and unsympathetic before we know any backstory, and partly just to be some relief from the oppressive horror, but now that the series feels lighter and we care about Guts, it's just standard comic relief sidekick territory and I'm finding him pretty annoying. I'm sure we'll need the comic relief again soon, though, this is Berserk after all
I didn't actually find the animation bothered me as much. You're probably right that it's worse, Werel, but I'm starting to ignore it more easily.

Re: Berserk
Berserk S2 E2
- Spoiler:
- I guess now that I'm steeled for it, I'm more used to the animation switching dimensions and quality at whim (still not as good as the anime)
- So it sounds like the Vatican thinks Guts is what Femto actually is? The fabled Black Hawk or whatever it is? Or maybe since Griffith is King that means he's feeding the Vatican false info
- The Hundred Man Guts flashback ;_;
- Oh dear god, the Holy Pampered Knights just got sliced in half, RIP Church Guys
- Did Serpico knock Guts into her blade?
- Ohohooooooooo, Whippy-chan knows who he is?
- Jesus, Guts just ripping her apart by telling her she's trying hard and it won't amount to any loyalty anyways
- I'm interested in seeing what Serpico's deal is
- Hoooookay, she's whipping herself
- Guts just knocks out a half naked woman praying for guidance from God, holy shit
- So, she can't see Puck, or she's mentally pretending he doesn't exist because it goes against her religion?
- Sooooooo, Guts' demons popped up around Serpico?

Not really liking this series all that much so far. It's just not a very faithful adaptation.

Re: Berserk
- Ep 3:
-Serpico gets thrown off his horse and rolls straight to kneeling, this guy's pretty cool so far.
-I still find it really weird that you can't see demons if you're closed-minded. Up till now, it seems like everyone has reacted as if they can see everything Guts can see, surely we would have run into more closed-minded random bystanders by now?
-"They're miracles, sent to this world by God," that's the cynical Guts we know
-Puck believes in God? I wonder what god - I'd assume not the same one as Pigtails does, but surely not the one of the God Hand either...
-"Thanks, it feels like crap"
-Is that the horse Guts stole? I was rooting for that horse.
-WTF were the animators thinking in that bit with Pigtails fleeing from the horse!? THAT IS NOT HOW HUMANS MOVE, PEOPLE!!
- I see we're going to be getting all the icky, sexed-up demon rape of female characters shit again Sigh, I was really hoping we'd be done with that or that the anime would be a little more restrained at least. Ugh.
-The whole city looking up to the castle, that's kind of ominous symbolism there.
-I'm sort of happy to see Charlotte again, but I'm worried about where that thread's going to go
-And doubly so for Casca next week.
It's feeling like a lot of random monster-of-the-day fighting and gore for gore's sake, the animation is making it very hard for me to ignore it, and I'm really not thrilled about the sexed-up sexual violence making a big return or the handling of Farnese so far, even though I think there's potential for an interesting character there. But on the plus side, I'm liking Serpico quite a lot with his whole casual trickster thing, and it feels like they're bringing out Guts' character a bit more with the sense of humour.

Re: Berserk
What a crap episode.
- s2e3:
-Oh lord, how serious are their budget issues if the third episode already looks this bad? The animation was aaaaawful this week.
-I don't think this dumbass haunted house even happened in the manga. How are they already doing filler episodes when they've got SO MUCH source material to work from?
-GREAT, let's take rape horse and turn it from one or two super creepy panels into minute-long cheesy overkill
-Farnese's mannequin boobs were around so long that I got mad at them. Also the most lame and hamfisted possible treatment of her relationship with sex and violence.
-Basically only the credit sequence of this episode wasn't garbage. "To be honest, I can't kill him."
-Puck's face when Serpico lands the hit on Guts
-Okay good let's go ahead and get to the Hawk of Light and stop wasting time with the monster of the week junk Miura was treading water with for a few volumes post-Eclipse.
Enail: I also am not sure how the seeing/not seeing demons mechanic is supposed to work, but I did like Farnese's reaction when that one thing put its hands on her face--seems like touching a demon makes most people very aware of them, so maybe what we've seen so far is people who've been physically attacked by demons already?
Yeaahhhh they do. And why the heck did it make the gong noise when he was cutting up ghosts? Was his sword ricocheting off the rock-hard ectoplasm...? Lazy, lazy sound editing.HermitTheToad wrote:And man, those sword swings sound awful.

Re: Berserk
S2E3
So was this the opening arc of the manga/pre-arc before The Golden Age?
- Spoiler:
- I wonder if the ghosts will freak Whippy-chan out enough that she'll see Puck
- I think the 3D effect actually does make the hounds look more freaky
- How did she know it was Serpico? <_<
- I miss the original anime's "SHUNK" sound effect
- tbh having whippy-chan bound and shirtless and wearing leggings is p. hot, even if her nipples are apparently skin-colour
- Annnnd 3D does not help this demon guy out either
- So I guess he was bullied, the Lady was nice to him, he became a demon and repaid her by eating her? I guess he did use that "Demons are the way they are because they're sad" thing.
- Rape-horse?
- Nice, half-dead and still holds up from decapitating her
- Soooo Farnese's a freaky sadist who's shamed to Hell and back because of her religion or upbringing and a demon finally convinced her to give in to it?
- Oh, possession. The demon found a weakness while she was cracking and took advantage of it
- "Pull your sword up." Thaaaaaaat isn't fucked up at all
- Well, that was a suitably traumatizing night
- Serpico's completely casual "Ow"
- THAT SWORD DRAW
- SERPICO CAN SEE PUCK
- Ohhhhhh, so similar to the possession, Griffith snuck into the people's desires by preying on their fears of the demon age?
- Foss still ballin'
- THINGS LOOK SO MUCH BETTER IN 2D
So was this the opening arc of the manga/pre-arc before The Golden Age?

None of the new characters except Puck are from the pre-Golden Age part of the manga. The first episode of the new anime is the only part that's based on the beginning of the manga as far as I can tell.

- Berserk (2016)-Episode 4:
- Glad they didn't fuck up Godo. Or Erica; she's as sweet as I remembered her to be .
Puck's voice actor is spot on too. Dialogue pacing still feels rushed though.
PS: I wanna be Godo when I grow up .

Re: Berserk
- S2E4:
-CASCAAAAAAAA / /
-Nice to see Rickert again (although I wouldn't have recognized him Not my fault, he changed his hair!)
-You tell 'em, Erica! And Godo! Dude needs some wisdom pummeled into him with tiny, tiny fists.
-The sword graveyard.
-The memories, that moment with the campfire light, Griffith alone in the snow, Guts slowly feeling his way back to what he needs to be doing, were completely getting me, and then that cheesy videogame victory music.
-Some of the scenery shots are actually quite pretty.
-I wonder how Farnese got to be in command of this group, given that this is a setting where a woman has to be pretty exceptional to get that kind of position and she's not a very good commander. Is it pure nepotism, or was it more because she was really zealous and good at fighting, for a noble?
-would a peasant really know about exponential numbers? Man, education is good in these dark ages!
-oh good, someone who's specialty is horrifying torture, I was worried we were getting a bit low in sadistic, graphic violence lately.
-Mozgus has a very geometric nose.
-combo plague doctor/gimp mask!?
-geometric nose and an impressive display of face-veins! I'm not sure about these character designs.
-Serpico giving Farnese that unreadable look. Acting as her conscience, maybe?
-Casca drooling and vacant is pretty painful to watch. I hope we're not going to get too much of using her as a totally unaware victim to be rescued, it feels like a manipulative way to get the audience caring. Please no more torture porn for her
I'm glad we're getting back into the heart of the story again, the politics and demon-killing don't mean a lot without how it connects to the past. But I'm worried where it's going to go...

- -Nice to at least be getting back to the story. Even if it feels a little heavy-handed compared to the nice slow unfolding of the manga, it's a whole lot better than that haunted house bullshit
-Hill of Swords looks good.
-I knew we'd be seeing Rickert soon but I'm still happy to see him
-Glad Godo got a good ol' Godo monologue.
-I think they're spending 90% of the animation budget on Puck
-Never stop running your sass mouth, Serpico, and never stop giving the hard side-eye to Farnese's desires.
-Farnese all "couldn't have been real" and Serpico simultaneously like "well that was completely real"
-Oh good, Father Mozgus is finally here. I've been waiting to point out how creepy it is that there's a statue of him in front of the Hawaii State Capitol.
-Animation quality seems to have picked up a lot for Torture Squad. Can't complain. I really like Birdface Plaguedoctor's design.
-Holy shit, this breaking wheel is the first time Berserk has ever gone with reaction shots to gruesome violence instead of showing it
-Heeeeeeere's Casca!
Had the same reaction. Someone please horribledub the soundtrack. - Oh noooo, Godo is going down
- Guts abandoned his remaining irreplaceable people, this feels more like Berserk
- Oh god, the Hawks graves, Rickert is truly best girl ;_;
- Thaaaat black dog demon thing telling him to keep on keeping on, all that stuff about him being a dog of war?
- Please stop hallucinating about them, my feels can't take it
- THE CAMPFIRES ARE BURNING IN MY HEART TOO, GATSOO ;_;
- "I only knew how to deal with iron, but she made me a pretty decent human being." ;___________;

For those of you who are up-to-date on the latest chapters of the manga: I just found out that Mangastream has released the latest translated chapter. Therefore, I'm assuming they'll continue to release high-quality scanlations of Berserk from here on out.
If you didn't know already, Mangastream is one of the more high-end manga websites. So there'll be no pop-ups or the like to contend with (Haven't dealt with any spam during my time there). The only 'downside' here is that they only host a few chapters for any given title at a time, out of respect for the authors and publishers of manga.
