Berserk Musings
- Spoiler:
I wonder if Guts is ever going to get to the point where the Godhand is going to offer HIM an advent and the ability to sacrifice everything he cares about for power. Like they'll know he's strong enough to fuck them up and they're just afraid enough to try to let him into the club instead
- Spoiler:
- It does seem kind of like the obvious thing for everything to lead to. Except I've always been unsure it'd work because I can't believe he'd ever consider it enough to make it a tense or meaningful decision. Maaaaaybe if he gets deep enough into despair from not having been able to touch Griffith or stop him from taking Casca, and then if Casca was at risk and he really really was otherwise helpless, because it's pretty impossible to imagine him just letting Casca be sacrificed and not doing something about it, but I think even Miura would have had a hard time hitting it hard enough to be convincing that he'd consider it. I definitely don't think the post-Miura crew could pull it off, they really aren't as strong on showing emotions. Of course, Miura would have planned it with the idea he'd be the one making it happen, so that doesn't mean much for what will happen.
I remember early on, I thought the new team would never outweigh the old team enough for them to be a meaningful sacrifice, too, but now they've had enough development, and Guts has had enough growth, instead it feels like the old team is far enough in the past and he's too different a person to choose to return there, for it to make sense for him to consider sacrificing the new team that's been such a part of how he's changed and who he is now. So I still think it would be unlikely to make it work, but for almost the opposite reason I thought so before.

Werel, good to see you! You definitely need to catch up, get it together, hurry up and suffer! Have you been reading the post-Miura manga?

Re: Berserk
Memorial Edition 13
- Spoiler:
- The OG anime with this scene was much worse too, though the gore of Guts arm ripping and shredding is obviously worse in this one
- They should've fucking killed Guts right now. "What can some human accomplish" and then he keeps pushing through it
- The did cut out the Femto dick from the movie version though
- Skull Knight is so fucking cool
- Femto tries to crush the Skull Knight but then doesn't afterwards when he sees Guts is on his back
- The Skull Knight offers no help when the brand monsters start showing up and Guts just gives no fucks and yoinks one of his swords cause that's the only help he needs
- And he's just like "...Shit, bro, I thought I'd be have to be more cryptically supportive to get you going again."

Re: Berserk
Agh, sorry I'm late, I completely lost track of time!
Memorial edition E13
New season must be starting soon, I haven't checked it out yet. And I assume lack of a thread means you haven't either.
Memorial edition E13
- Spoiler:
-they had to show us the Pippin scene a second time, thanks, I needed more misery in my life!
-the way they both stand there in silence for so long when Femto comes down to face him.
-the music is so over-the-top and ridiculous for all the rapey scenes
-him just staring at Guts the whole time while he's assaulting Casca is super-creepy and makes it feel like it's 100% about Guts only, whereas in the manga where lack of movement means it's not so blatant that he's making eye contact with Guts the whole time, it feels more like there's an element of wanting to hurt Casca as well, at least just as part of the general orgy of horror destroying the Hawks.
-oh god, the losing his arm part is so visceral, the way it mangles as he struggles and then seeing the flesh crushed bit by bit as he hacks it off and then stretched as he pulls. I actually flinched for a moment.
-Casca telling him not to look
-the rape scene was actually way less bad than I expected from how the other ones were done in this version, there weren't those millions of sexy ass shots that the manga has. If they'd only left off the piano music and the sounds of pleasure...
-seeing Skull Knight come and save the day makes you realize how helpless Guts has been here compared to later, you see there's a whole other level of power that Guts' best before now never even touched
-the vision of the Hawks all silently riding away
-his expressions as he sees Casca and slowly realizes what's going on with her are absolutely heartbreaking, they did a fantastic job here
-I already miss sane Casca
-that desperate run and all the memories, and then when the brand starts bleeding and he hears the demons and you realize nothing's over and he's in this nightmare forever
-I feel like this 'determined Guts setting off' scene would be better without this almost triumphant heroic music; it's not that kind of story. There's some kind of triumph in the way he gets up and keeps fighting no matter what, but this isn't the right music for that.
-"Forever in pursuit of a flickering light." Thank you, Miura.

Re: Berserk
Lack of a thread means more that "I don't have time to watch a lot of this, so I'll just watch Vinland Saga, Boku no Hero Academia, try to catch up on Gundam and perhaps season 2 of BOFURI"
- Spoiler:
The rape scene did have some things cut out from the movie version, but even with the higher production values and animation and how gross Guts arm was, I still think the '97 anime version is the worst one

Okay, I'll just stick with Vinland Saga, then.

- Spoiler:
- Wait, are you counting the grossness of Guts' arm as making it better or worse??
Also, I'd thought you said the '97 anime was the best one (in the sense of "the most effectively done, with the least horribleness that detracts from the storytelling (and the most horribleness that adds to it), have you changed your opinion or are you saying it was the worst in the sense of most effectively awful (and least detractfully awful)?

374
- Spoiler:
- Casca being princess'd up but also seeming to recall what's happened here and there
- Also seems to believe Guts won't make it without her
373
- Spoiler:
- Schierke trying to magic herself to find Casca
- Guts black dog trying to tempt him with power?
- Griffith landing on Guts sword the same way he did way back when
- Yep, the Black Dog wants him to just give in and send it
- Ayyyy the Kushans showed up
374
- Spoiler:
So the Kushan took prisoners instead of killing them all and whatnot. Guts still too weak to do anything about it, which means he either didn't give in to the Black Dog or Griffith was able to subdue it somehow.
Also Rickert?

Re: Berserk
Finally got to this!
372
373
374
372
- Spoiler:
-Casca watching Guts disappear in her dream
-her unreadable expression while she's getting dressed up all princessy
-Crying at the new Band of the Hawk marching by but so demure and calm the whole time, you don't know exactly if she's enchanted-ish and accepting this situation and it's just a remnant of her true feelings leaking through that she doesn't understand, or if she feels trapped and playing along and those quiet tears are all she can allow herself, or what's going on with her.
-Yup, enchanted
-YES! GO CASCA! BREAK FREE!
-she knows Guts is drowning without her
-Damnit
-what's Zod sulking about?
I feel like the art's improved this chapter, they managed to make Griffith sufficiently pretty. I just wish they had Miura's talent for expressions.
373
- Spoiler:
-that panel of Schierke with her witch's robes all swoopy and almost ominous, with the candles echoing her shape and the roof-beams curving around her, was really good, the feeling of authority, and that she's something eldritch and powerful.
-the black dog tempting him, and he's grabbing the sword, but then that vision of Griffith on the sword blade, and he just can't.
-bad time to be boarded
374
- Spoiler:
-Isidoro looking actually badass kicking a raider overboard
-Serpico's expression when he sees Farnese under attack, like oh fuck, I let my guard down, my world might be ruined
-expecting Guts to slaughter everyone when they open the door, but he's still just lying on the floor not even reacting
-But then the chains all snapping
-I-is that Rickert???
