Re: Berserk
So, apparently Miura's publisher has released a notice of his death. I know he's been believed dead before, but this looks pretty serious. Godfuckingdamnit! I almost can't believe someone so insanely talented could die before he finishes his big work! How could the universe do this to all of us?!
So I guess this is goodbye and thanks, Miura-sensei

Re: Berserk
Chapter 83
Chapter 362
Chapter 83 Implications
Chapter 363
- Spoiler:
Man created God and the Idea of Evil. So we're implying all these fantastical elements were just our own imagination?
Chapter 362
- Spoiler:
- "Down boy" to Guts in the Berserker Armour like he's a dog
- The sacrifice tattoo on what I assume was the lover of the Skull Knight. I forget what his legend was about.
- Five Godhand members but except for the leader they don't look like the current Godhand. Does this imply that the Skull Knight killed the rest and destabilized whatever they were planning on doing?
Chapter 83 Implications
- Spoiler:
- That woman is sure very Griffith-looking. The Idea of Evil manipulated history to make Griffith happen
Chapter 363
- Spoiler:
- Eyyyy it looks like the Skull Knight's woman. Was that the elf queen?
- "Already fallen to the Dark Side, have you"
- Freed from gravity because the forest loves people who get carried away
- NO LAWS BIND ME TODAY
- "Spit him out!" (After sucking out all the flavour)
- AGHHHHHHHHHHHH DON'T LEAVE IT THERE

It is a real shame. I haven't read the manga but I do own the TV anime series version of BERSERK which came out in the late 90's/early 2000's, I believe.
Heart attack at 54. A part of me hopes the tragedy helps shine a light on the often brutal schedules that many manga creators live under. A lot of ink and digital space has been given to the plight of American comic creators, but in Japan, manga creators face another level. I remember one creator revealed his homemade schedule online once which only allowed for maybe 1-2 hours a week which was not spent eating, sleeping, or working (or meeting editors). It is, sadly, not unheard of to hear of a manga creator dying for various reasons in their 40's to 60's. Their crammed schedules pumping out 40-100 pages a month is insane and often leads to ill health, even with "assistants" who help some. R.I.P.

I wonder if there's another chapter finished but not yet published or if that's the last of it. Apparently he had a lot of notes, so I imagine someone's going to finish it at least roughly according to his intention, but it won't be the same
- Spoiler:
-oooh, a memory of Skull Knight from the armour!
-previous Godhand. Does that mean that Skull Knight killed the others?? Or, since IIRC Brain was involved in his story, and I assume that's when he became part of the Godhand, it could be that Brain killed the one he replaced and maybe even the others rather than Skull Knight doing it
-Griffith-like hair, but it's a woman with the sigil. I don't remember Skull Knight's story much, but I really didn't think it mentioned a woman before.
363
- Spoiler:
-Skull Knight's lover was an elf (I guess? I suppose she could be a witch, but given that she looks like the Elf Queen seems more likely she was an elf), and Flora served under her, and was kicked out for violating a taboo after the eclipse. That sounds like maybe she joined Skull Knight in trying to get revenge?
-Yoda elf
-Isidoro's Ultra Three-Dimensional Killing Art is tying witches up like pumpkins
-the forest loves people who go overboard
-Jar Jar Binks elf
-"In the end, you must determine what to make of your fury"
-I thought that kid was just the spirit of the elf queen sent out to them?

Re: Berserk
83 - I'm honestly not sure if this one was included when I read Vol 13 or not, so this'll be a surprise. I wasn't that into the metaphysical stuff then so even if I did read it, a lot wouldn't have registered. I went back and read the end of 82 to orient myself and it seemed quite unfamiliar too, so I'm not sure if I'll even know whether I have read 83 or not.
Still not sure if I'd seen it before but leaning towards not.
- Spoiler:
-Hm, it doesn't seem too familiar, but I can't say I'm surprised that this 'god' of evil comes from the thoughts and needs of humans; either it's already in the back of my mind or it just fits
-it creates beheilits to control destiny because humans need the things that happen to them to be for a reason
-"Be as you will" Much like "do as you will." But more essential.
-Griffith's reaction to "I'm god, made out of man's need, and I exactly designed everything in all history to bring you here" is "I want wings"
Still not sure if I'd seen it before but leaning towards not.

- Spoiler:
- I wouldn't say it's implying that, I think it's more saying that humans' need actually made it real; this is a world where what we desire is just as solid as what we are - maybe moreso, since it shows us Griffith's flesh unmaking and changing, but his desire never does. But on a meta level, I'm pretty sure Miura's telling us the horrors of the world of Berserk are all our fault for wanting to read it.

- Spoiler:
- Meaning she could be Griffith's mother? That could be. I'd kind of rather they don't go that detailedly into how it makes history happen, it works better staying kind of broad and metaphysical for stuff like that than trying to shore it up with specifics.
Also, they described the woman as looking like the Elf Queen too (even though she looks more like Griffith), so it could be that her looking so much like Griffith was intended to be Guts' association or even just the thematic parallel, rather than a family resemblance)

Re: Berserk
- Spoiler:
If you recall when the Band of the Hawk broke into that deep dungeon to fish Griffith out of it, that's when we heard a story of an old king and saw those skulls at the bottom with sacrifice marks on them. They said it was from a long long time ago, and it's been implied that old king was the Skull Knight.
So I wouldn't assume that was Griffith's mother, but perhaps some kind of bloodline. Slightly Elfin, slightly magical, slightly out of this world to create the charisma to drive people to follow them.

Re: Berserk
September 10th, there's gonna be a new chapter that also memorializes Miura. He apparently had a few chapters already finished before he passed so there's still a bit of the story to go, but they also haven't announced if Berserk will continue beyond this

Re: Berserk
I'm glad they're going to give it a shot, and it sounds like they've got enough info to go on to at least show us the key points he intended. I'm a little alarmed by the mention of new characters he designed, it seems awfully late in the game to introduce anyone new!

Re: Berserk
It is good news for fans and similar to how some science fiction novel franchises have endured beyond a creator's death; DUNE being the best example.
Can't help but think about one of my favorite anime/manga franchises, BIO-BOOSTER ARMOR GUYVER by Yoshiki Takaya. Unlike Miura, Takaya supposedly does not work with assistants; this is especially a problem as he has some kind of chronic illness. Manga volumes came out fairly consistently once a year from 1986 until 2016, with only a few instances of 2-3 year gaps in the 90's. The storyline got kind of nuts and despite 3 anime adaptations and 2 American film adaptations, none of them ever got close to concluding it with an ending (unlike, say, CLAMP's long unfinished X/1999). After about 6 years, it is doubtful more may be coming. So at least BERSERK fans have new material to look forward to.

Re: Berserk
Memorial Edition E2
- Spoiler:
-is this all meant to be the intro? It's weird how they're having little recap-style scenes of things that haven't happened yet on the show, they're giving away half the key parts of the story!
-maybe they're not actually planning to re-tell the story so much as to do a commemorative recap music video? This is getting really long for an intro! They're even getting into the later characters.
-Okay, looks like we're back to story. I guess they stuck to movie-length credits or something even though they're switching it to episode format. I hope they're not going to do all that every episode.
-huh, the word they're translating as Nosferatu is just "immortal." Or maybe "undead," I guess if you fancied that up you could go with Nosferatu?
-the massive charge of knights and then a single figure on a horse, just the scale feels so satisfying
-the way Guts is just picking at stones on the ground while Casca chews him out, like a sullen child, is a nice bit of character detail.
-The backgrounds in this show are very pretty
-agh, the faces are so bad, Guts looks like a big dumb oaf, and his expression when Casca calls him a mad dog is more constipated than furious and hurt. Early Berserk manga always did look a little weird for faces, so I could forgive the awkward look for being true to the original, but it never failed to capture even complex feelings perfectly, and without that, a lot of this suffers a ton.
-While he was apologizing to Griffith, it looked good for once, though
-the Zodd scene good, entering felt more tense with sound than the manga, and the action's intense, and even Guts' emotions come through better; this show's not bad at expressing emotion through movement, and just brief glimpses of a scowl or an eye widening here and there work much better than full faces for the cg.
-it's amazing how well Berserk holds up to repeat viewings because even though you've been spoiled on everything that happens and lost a lot of mystery and suspense, the gut-punch of watching the characters all young and innocent charging into it again totally outweighs it
-the guy getting torn in half with gushy blood sounds
-Griffith and Guts slicing past Zodd together

Re: Berserk
Ch 364
Ch. 364.5
- Spoiler:
-the kid's not the Elf Monarch after all, huh, guess it was just a fakeout to throw us off from the demon fetus theories and stuff
-I'm gonna be so disappointed if they just make Casca all motherly now, when we've finally got her back as herself
-everyone as a happy family together is sweet, though
-Guts can't even keep hold of his sword without the armour now
-playing inside the Berserker armour, that's heartwarming but also unsettling. They're going so hard on making the kid be pure and good that I'm more worried about him just being some kind of perfect holy child that fixes everything in a saccharine way than about the armour taking him over, though.
-oh god, demon fetus confirmed, I hate most of the possibilities of where they could go with this
-Casca starting to realize everything
-what the FUCK?!? GRIFFITH????
The final chapter Miura drew is all soft, a little melancholy, but everyone mostly happy together, and then Griffith! What a way to end things!
Ch. 364.5
- Spoiler:
-feels almost wrong watching his friend crying at his coffin like this. Feels like he's handed us a page from his diary.
-aww, they were so cute together
-For some reason, I found the panel of the author thinking "what kind of torture is this, you bastard" but half-smiling about it especially touching. , Miura knowing he'd always come back to manga so never bugging him about it but also never stopping bouncing his thoughts off of him like his partner.
God fucking damn.

I was kind of thinking about that the way through, wondering if they'd have a massive fight or something or if it was some other friend that'd show up in this comic, but then it was just all incredibly sweet and touching, and I figured it must not be him, and just... No idea how to react to that.
