Re: Joys and Good News
I asked a friend out to the movies and it worked. I initiated! That's been really hard for me, historically, so I'm really happy!
In other news, I recently discovered a possible semi-kink/fantasy of a relationship dynamic that I want. Don't know if I could find somebody to reciprocate it, but I had such an aha! moment with it and now I'm kinda excited (not sharing it here, yet, still processing). ETA: Plus, this fantasy kinda contradicts things I've said before, which makes me wonder if those were defense mechanisms or something.

YAY! and fantasies often contradict, especially when made In a vacuum of experience. They are to be tested, tried and kept/discarded as needed

Re: Joys and Good News
That's great Wisp! Both the asking your friend out bit and the discovering the possible semi-kink/fantasy bit. reboot speaks great wisdom on that front, although I wouldn't really know much since the only thing I have that I would qualify as a fantasy in that sense involves flagrant violations of the laws of physics so it's already not gonna happen.
In other news, I made this post in the Random Thoughts thread:
I was chosen!
In other news, I made this post in the Random Thoughts thread:
What was going on there was: I saw someone looking to GM a game of Mutants & Masterminds (that superhero-themed Dungeons & Dragons I mentioned in one of the Doc's open thread posts) and decided to submit a character. Once the deadline for applications was reached, the GM would then run the game with six of the players who submitted a character sheet and backstory.Robjection wrote:An accurate depiction of my current situation, except the "manuscript" in my case is a backstory for a superhero.

As someone who doesn't know Canadian politics, are they the liberals or the conservatives?

Re: Joys and Good News
Based on a comment I saw elsewhere online, that it would be like Bernie Sanders winning Texas, I'm going with liberals.
I have no idea what orange means in this context, though. Is that like calling democrats blue and republicans red in the US?

Looks like the NDP usage is derived from the Orange Order.

Re: Joys and Good News
NDP, orange, is the "third party" in Canada - they are the leftest of the 3 major parties, red Liberals are the center and blue Conservatives are the rightest (I know, the colours are mixed up from the US). There are other parties which get seats in government regularly as well but are not as broadly based or as regularly elected.

Re: Joys and Good News
It's the US who's mixed up, Leftists (not that the Democratic Party is in any way leftist, but still) should be red.

Blame Southern Strategy for that bizarre reversal.
I wouldn't necessarily infer "liberal" from the "Bernie Sanders wins Texas" analogy; seems to me more of a description of probability than of political alignments.

Actually, for awhile the colors were just sort of random based on the news source. Some news sources used blue for Republicans and red for Democrats even after the southern strategy. For instance, in 1980:
In 2000, when most of the networks had arbitrarily chosen red for Bush and blue for Gore, the long recount left everybody talking about "red states" for Bush and "blue states" for Gore, and after 5 weeks of that the colors stuck even though they had been arbitrary to that point.

Re: Joys and Good News
I had a big long post written, but The Wisp got there before me. What he said.
I will also add that the red and blue for the two parties had to do with our flag colors, not red for communists or anything like that.
And I realize several of you may be too young to remember a time before red = Republicans and blue = Democrats. And that makes me feel really old.

How much would it sting to not only be ousted, but to be ousted by a 20 year old student and the youngest member of parliament for hundreds of years?
Moreover, it's good for Mhairi. Hopefully she can do some good with the seat.

I am in Alberta (and follow politics) and I .. am sort of not sure what to make of it! I went out for dinner on Tuesday, and left the restaurant (just after polls closing) and was not actually expecting that. Despite threehundredeight.com totally calling it. Jaded from 2012 (when polls indicated that the far-right party would get in ... and then the center-right party that was in power for 44 years got a handy majority. Possibly because everyone else was scared of the more-right party).

The criticism better be about how lightweight that drink is.

Re: Joys and Good News
The block across the street from my mom's has a... not sure what it's called in English, Google Translate says gallery? Bit like a balcony, only it connects all the outwards-facing apartments on that floor? Anyway, as I sat down in the armchair, right in front of the window, two women are out there smoking, and I'm thinking I must be very visible from where they're standing, and then I notice them waving, and I wave back a bit uncertainly, and they start jumping up and down. That was kind of nice
(Might possibly have to do with my reality star past.)

So, our local game store runs D&D Encounters, an official WotC sanctioned game night for people that might be interested in trying D&D or playing in a low consiquence, come-when-you-can group. Recently our table was getting too large (8-10 people) and I was asked to run the second table. I did the first game last Wednesday and the players said they had a blast running with me. I get to do it again this week and I'm super excited.

Ah, that's a nice feeling! It's been a long time since I've done any kind of rpg-thing, but I still remember things like that.

Got a job interview tomorrow at a local TV news station.
