Re: Random Thoughts: The Randoming
"She was flirting with you!"
-You read too much into it.
-If she was signalling interest and kept doing it during the course of me being my regular self, she has a terrible taste in men.
-No, this is patronizing and insulting towards the gal, who am I to dictate her taste, she's putting herself out there all vulnerable and shit.
-Would be sad if I wouldn't indulge her, and if she can stand me at this level, she can probably also stand me botching up any further stuff.
My thought processes are truly the worst.

Re: Random Thoughts: The Randoming
Receive text from a friend this afternoon: "I have a virgin friend who is looking for a one night stand cherry popping. Do you know anyone tall and nice?"
Me, internally: I HAVE NEVER TOLD YOU THIS ABOUT MYSELF, WHY ARE YOU SAYING THIS TO ME
And then she clarified that it was a) a girl looking for a NSA first time, and b) a girl I know. Who is 23, very physically attractive by my reckoning, and an absolute sweetheart delight of a person. Just one more example of frustration + virginity well into one's 20s + a feeling of desperation and inability to find a sexual partner = totally a thing that happens to women too...

Wait, wut? I'm confused by your initial reaction.
Anyway, what I'm wondering is... if there's so many of us frustrated and desperate 20-something virgins, then how come or why the hell can we not all find each other and screw like bunnies?
Also, dude, your friend seeking NSA funtimes is my age and sounds awesome. If only~

The "deflowering" thing kinda turns her on.
(Also cool that A Friend apparently knows/trusts Werel enough to (a) ask that sort of favor, (b) not have to go over the long lists of clarifying requirements that are implicitly necessary for a safe NSA/ONS partner that aren't really covered by "tall and nice". Character.self_assessment_score++)

Derp. That's right, I'm sorry.

Where does the 'Love at first sight' trope come from?
Is it weird to find someone attractive (physically) and yet not be attracted to them?

I don't think so -- I've seen many objectively attractive men. But relatively few subjectively attractive men:)

Re: Random Thoughts: The Randoming
I keep reading stuff like this and thinking about how these semi-universalizing notions intersect with tribal segments: http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/issue-sections/staff-editorials/11594/what-women-wont-tell-you-sex/?tw=kr
Would you be able to make a framework that most respondents in Marcotte's following are of a certain experiential/political/personality staple, and that this overlaps with behaviour and preferences in bed? Not in the absolute sense, but enough to make up a few general markers:
-Bad experience with macho prestige bros/hurt male egos
-General skepticism towards pornification of everything and the accompanying funfems
-This ties together with a subdivision of feminist politics(sex-positive-critical?)
-As such, the confidence with which they can say "Women"(not all but certainly a significant segment to validate writing this article) stems specifically from the fact that they've gravitated towards each other and because they clash with the aforementioned bro-groups(who in meatspace would mostly hang it without dudettes who generally don't share the problems identified in the article) on the web
Dunno how true this is, but it's a useful manner to envision and diversify the monolith that feminism gets painted as and understand how the various substrands interact, methinks.

Naah, I find plenty of people attractive in a sort of Greek staturary strictly aesthetic sense without being particularly interested in them in a living, breathing human being sense.

Me too. I can look and think "nice looking person" without wanting to know them at all in a secular or biblical sense

Well, and then there are some nice looking people who I do know and who I'm not attracted to because of what I've learned about them.

Yeah Hermit, it's called aesthetic attraction.

Re: Random Thoughts: The Randoming
For a reason I can't be bothered to explain I was looking through the list of legendary creatures that begin with T on Wikipedia today. And my goodness the Japanese have some interesting additions to the collection:
Taka-onna - Female spirit which can stretch itself to peer into the second story of a building
Tantankokorin - Unharvested persimmon which becomes a monster
Tatami-tatakai - Poltergeist that hits the tatami mats at night
Te-no-me - Ghost of a blind man, with his eyes on his hands
Tofu-kozo - Spirit child carrying a block of tofu
Toire-no-Hanakosan - Ghost who lurks in grade school restroom stalls
Tsukumonogami - Inanimate object that becomes animated after existing for 100 years
Tsurana-onna - Icicle woman
Tsurube-otoshi - Monster which drops or lowers a bucket from the top of a tree to catch people
Anyone ever heard of any of these?

Targeted internet ad algorithms must be quite interesting. The one that guessed that, for whatever reason, I might be interested in a Baldur's Gate 4 in 1 box set is really quite clever. The one that continually recommends I look at an apartment in the complex that I've been living in for the last 6 months, less so.

The local bar is offering a prize for Quizzo that they say is unbelievable.
I suspect it's Brian Williams' autobiography.

How is crochet so hard? It doesn't look hard when other people do it, but my fingers don't even want to be in those positions. I'm hoping this isn't something that's beyond my dexterity - the yarn is so soft and pretty that it would be a shame not to use it.

Work in Progress
I gave up on knitting. It seemed like it should be the perfect hobby for me: I love knitted things, and it's so much more portable than quilting. But I just can't make the stringy stuff turn into loopy stuff.

The conversation about tropes in science fiction and fantasy and stories that play with those tropes in unusual ways has attracted quite a lot of interest, so it now has its own topic in the Geekery and Entertainment section.

Okay, it's going a bit better now. I had to remind myself that I learned how to cross stitch as a child, so of course starting to do it again as an adult would come fairly easily. I've never done anything like crochet before, so it's going to be more like learning to play the guitar was - lots of slow going while I learn the basic motions. It's probably good for me to do something that requires some patience, since I'm used to being good at things and learning them quickly.
Also somewhat randomly, it says some really cool things about the intersection between technology and human benevolence that you can go to YouTube and find a video of a person demonstrating almost any practical skill you can imagine, from car repair to crafts to makeup application.

Just found a hair on my head that was grey at the tip, but then darker towards the roots. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around?
